End of support for Windows 7

Will WCG continue to supply and receive units from Windows 7 machines after the end of support on Tuesday?

I have no intention of installing any other operating system as Wndows 7 Professional is the last to permit the use of MS DOS, albeit via a built in emulator that stopped being supported years ago (XP).

MS DOS is needed to run my Bank Manager program which I do not want to replace as it holds 32 years of data and is able to do anything that I might want to do banking-wise.

Any alternative suggestions to allow MS DOS would be appreciated.

Mike

Re: End of support for Windows 7

There are a number of VMs that can be installed on Windows 10 that can run MS DOS

Re: End of support for Windows 7

I do not see any reason why WCG should not send anymore WU's to Windows 7 machines; at least as long as boinc supports Win7.
On my side, Windows 10 is taboo; for my business environment, there is an on-going migration to Linux. The last Windows-based business machine will be virtualised (Win 7 Pro) and this particular machine is not enrolled in WCG. I maintain only one bare-metal Windows 7 machine for some legacy software. The rest (in particular WCG support) is already on Linux since years.
Cheers,
Yves

Re: End of support for Windows 7

WCG continued to use XP long after support was discontinued. I assume the same would be true for Windows 7. I also, no longer have any Windows systems.

Look into DOSbox: https://www.dosbox.com/
I installed it on Windows 10 Pro to run old DOS games from the 90s like Dune 2, and it worked great after a brief learning curve. It may work for programs other than games. Give it a shot!

Another option is to set up a virtual machine -- with Windows 7 or perhaps Windows XP or even Windows 98 SE -- and run your old DOS banking program in its own VM with all network access disabled for security reasons.

Have you verified that your Banking Program absolutely will not work in Windows 10, even trying the different compatibility modes? (Right-click, go to Properties.) It may be worth investigating if Win10 runs your old Banking Manager either outright or with DOSbox running in Win10.

(Goes without saying to have multiple backups of your 32 years of banking data. I would be without words if I lost all that.)

The most painful solution would be to find a new banking program and import all your data into that. It doesn't have to be Intuit Quicken or QuickBooks. There's many free options like GNUCash and likely others that are free for Linux or Windows, Mac, etc. I currently do all my finances in Microsoft Excel but am considering converting to LibreOffice.

Win7 is my beloved OS, and I despise 8.1 and 10's constant telemetry and invasion of privacy, and I despise Microsoft for laying off their QA testing team and relying more heavily on Windows Insiders, constantly pushing out unstable and buggy updates. I did pay $199.99 for a legal license of Windows 10 Pro, but I will accelerate my transition to Linux and only use Win10 for gaming or school-related necessities with nothing personal on that machine.

I still have an 8 thread Vista machine that is crunching at 60% power and sending good results.
A Win 7 laptop at 50% power and 2 Win 7 desktops are sending. Microsoft suggests that I replace them with NEW computers. Maybe not.
I finally got two Win 10 desktops to contribute.

Similar here. I have Q6600 running Vista still chugging along. i am going to keep it going until it hits a milestone and then phase it out. I haven't yet picked the right milestone.

Re: End of support for Windows 7

Thanks, guys.

That has given me some options. I still have an old Vista machine (dual core) in the loft which was the last OS to allow MS DOS directly. It was too slow for everything else that I wanted to do, so I replaced it with my current machine which has Win 7 Professional. The standard Win 7 does not have an emulator but the Professional and Ultimate versions have an XP Emulator which will run MS DOS.

I think I will carry on with my current machine for a while to see how things go relying on Kaspersky to sort out any security issues. If I get some problems, I will probably use my little laptop which also has Win 7 Pro as a standalone. I will keep the Vista machine in reserve because I don't have the space for 2 towers in my bedroom/office.

Still running an XP machine. Gets plenty of work and see no reason to retire it.
