Re: No tasks available

I've seen the slowdown on the older systems. running a few at a time, they would finish in about 3 to 4 hours. Full load and the run time jumps to almost 9 hours. The 3900X seems to be effected less by the load. I'm now running 10 ARP1 units and 14 MIP units. Some of the MIP units have slowed to finishing in about 4 hours while the ARP1 are ending in about 14. Running 24 MIP units last evening and some were finishing in under an hour. I'm sold. Just ordered 2 more 3900X processors and I'm going to swap out some older 4 core APUs. The EPYC server is running 128 MIP units and they are running 5 to 7 hours depending on the work unit. In addition to the performance, I've dropped about 200W of power load and gained 4 threads overall.

Re: No tasks available

Thanks. I was wondering whether the 3900X was an improvement. It certainly looks capable and efficient. One problem with WCG is that I can't even see what you are running (OS, memory, etc.), so it is a bit of a shot in the dark when we discuss these issues.

I am full up for now with the Ryzens, but will be looking to upgrade next year.

No chip will help you get work when there is none available.

I have five machines, all with the usual amount of MIP in the buffer. They have been coming in regularly from what I can see.
I have the buffer set for 0.5+0.5 days on three of them, and 0.1+0.5 days on two, so I should know quickly if there was no work.

But I limit them to run two at a time with an app_config.xml, and run the others (mainly MCM) on the other cores. And I adjust the "Project Limits" accordingly, in order to keep them in stock (usually around 45 MCM for 15 or 18 MIP).

Maybe you should check your settings.

Re: No tasks available

Work unit availability has been dropping steadily for days.

From 571,580 validations on September 17th (120 years) to 132,721 validations (24 years) on October 2nd.

I suspect the next set of batches are not ready, and the project is being temporarily throttled so as to not lose the throughput of any MIP-only crunchers.

If you are only running this project, this may be a good time to diversify your contribution. As MIP units compete against each other for shared CPU resources, your overall impact will rise.

Yes. If they run out, you need something else to fill in. So the easiest way is to just run something else along with them.

I have to limit the MIP (with an app_config.xml) to run only two at a time on my Ryzen 2700 and Intel Haswell CPUs. On my Ryzen 3000 machines, I can usually do four of them, depending on what else is running. They do not do well with ARP; I suggest one or the other. Otherwise, your efficiency suffers.

Re: No tasks available

I just got some 20 minutes ago, so it must have been a temporary shortage.

Re: No tasks available

Is there a new shortage of WUs?
