ELECTRIC CARS

A few years ago we had a thread running about solar. A lot has happened since then with Electric and electrified vehicles.
For simplicity's sake a few definitions, not to be nitpicky just so we are all talking about the same thing.

BEV A BATTERY ELECTRIC VEHICLE = NO GAS
HYBRID A vehicle with an extra electric motor and battery = better gas mileage
Then I don't even know what to call the electric vehicle with range extender. the I3 and Chevy Volt are the 2 examples of this that I know.

So anyone drive electric?
In 07 I bought a Saturn Vue Hybrid 29 mpg
Not bad considering it's bigger than our 2013 Rogue which gets 25 mpg.
That was it until around 2014,
2014 Smart Electric. I don't know the mpge (e = equivalent) over 100 I imagine.
2015 I bought a used 2013 VOLT. When I bought it, the guy had used it as a commuter car and it was about 70 mpg(e?) average.
Then in 2016 I had a meltdown and went WAY out of my price range and bought a TESLA MODEL S.
It is rated 89 MPGE.
They have improved the newest one is 111mpge
The model 3 even better around 130 (there are dif models).

So my vehicle costs me (and this is me guessing) about $5 to fill up,
with a 400 KM range. I used it to Uber for a couple years, have driven 118,000 KM and I guestimate that I have saved $20,000 (in Canadian dollars, so like $15,000 USD) Yes electric is THAT much cheaper. Hoping to put solar up next year, and run the car off sunshine! biggrin

So what electrics are you guys driving? I'm interested especially to hear from our European brothers/sisters. You have more choices over there. Or any Chinese you have the MOST choices!

Re: ELECTRIC CARS

2014 I bought a used 2012 VOLT. I drive mostly electric and lifetime average is 170 mpg. Still LOVE it!
2016 I installed solar on my roof. I try to charge my car during the day when the sun is shining so I "fill up on sunshine"
I'm in Florida, USA

Re: ELECTRIC CARS

I have looked into electric. The unanswered question is the lifespan and cost to replace the battery, and the impact on resale value. In the bad old days of internal compassion engines, duration between multi-thousand dollar engine builds was less than 100kmiles. Now a days 200,000 miles is achievable. If batteries don't last a fraction of that it will be a major driver into cost.

Re: ELECTRIC CARS

A quick search shows a Telsa with over 560,000 miles. See link.

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&...Vaw14Fvkgvjes08_TNW0yhkQS

The article does say he is on his second battery pack. It doesn't say when he got the second pack. Even if he is at the end of life of the second pack that averages to 280k miles per pack. It also doesn't mention the price of the pack.

I did some research, the companies have 7 year+ warrentees. Here is what Tesla is claiming for their "Mass Mkt" Model 3 https://interestingengineering.com/tesla-puts...lacement-around-5000-7000

Since Musk is not the most credible/consistent actor... BUYER BEWARE!!!

It's still earlyish days on batteries but, I'm at 3 years and 120,000 KM
lost maybe 10 km of range, still close to 400KM a 'tank' (charge).
I still have 5 years of battery warranty left.
Resale seems to be slightly higher than other high priced vehicles,
but in the cheaper electrics because they get the $7500 tax credit, price went down quickly.

Re: ELECTRIC CARS

EVs could take over quicker than most people realize, the same way digital cameras overtook film. The battery makes up half the price of a Tesla, its the key component that needs to be made cheaper and more efficient. And with global demand pushing research and development in that direction, bit by bit, that is happening. https://about.bnef.com/blog/battery-pack-pric...erage-at-156-kwh-in-2019/

Re: ELECTRIC CARS

Despite all the propaganda about EVs they are NOT green by any stretch of the imagination. It takes massive amounts of energy to mine the rare earth minerals, manufacture the batteries and keep them charged. When the batteries reach EOL you have a highly toxic lithium battery to dispose of that can't be recycled. Any savings that might be gained will be lost when the batteries need replacing. A high mileage ICE vehicle will use far less energy over it's lifetime than an EV.. Why do you think GM quit making the Volt and Tesla is bleeding millions of dollars every quarter?
