multi project issue ( resource share issue )

Hi all

not sure whats the issue is,
denis project - rosetta - WCG

i have tried to allocated resource for this.
problem is i have run WCG for years ( thats not the problem )
i have reactivate the other project also.

i have even tried to set WCG to 800% or 1600%
i have 8cpu. i just want the other project to take 1-2 cpu for those project. ( if work is there )
but fact is rosetta take almost all cpu now.
i have even tried on those page to set to 10%

also notice maybe its client that look at total work done at project and then share resouces among them, but aient it here it fail, its should only be a setting on the cpu
it look like that.

and we all know WCG has way more project's in one project, so my point is
i dont think that was ment to be this way, it dont make sense a new project down the road can hijack all cpu's because of zero workunit done before.

either im doing something wrong in a setting or maybe there is something wrong with split project resource share. or a bug has just happend in our client down the road.

idea was WCG use all cpu if other project has no work
and other project use 1 cpu per project

( atm. rosetta take 6 cpu and wcg 2 ) and that is way off. ( unless it look at all the key i have done on WCG , this make sense or does it ?

Re: multi project issue ( resource share issue )

all of them, its even worse now, rosetta take 7 cpu and wcg has 1

denis 10% (8,33%) ( no work atm,)
rosetta has 10% (8,33%)
and wcg has 100% (83,33%) ( try to fiddle with settings it looks like a reversed setting ) resource share among project.

as i try to explan look more like a client issue with already current work done and not cpu available

load share in already completed result ( as i tried to explan most be a bug, or look like it. )

wcg 11,586,407
rosetta 284,324
denis 53,132

Re: multi project issue ( resource share issue )

Maybe set the resource share to "100" for 1 core on a project, or "700" on another for 7 cores...? It's approximate but will generally keep the runtimes the same

Re: multi project issue ( resource share issue )

yeah that is what i try to do, but rosetta is not part of WCG but another bonic manager project, and there is no option in rosetta@preference and i bet then i edit bonic preference at rosetta page as i did before it all bonic client change not for that project alone.

Re: multi project issue ( resource share issue )

that actual did it, all other rosetta pause and 1 cpu only for that project. ( reset is wait to run )
and wcg now have 7 = multi project in on project.

but its clearly that load share dont work like that.

and now i can turn them back at 100%

ps.
its rosetta project : bonic manager computer preference
not rosetta@preference, i can see they have change page, or update it.
thats okay, last test i will pause and see if WCG grab last cpu then free, then it work like as i think it should.

but i still think its odd loadshare dont work like that 2/3 to wcg and rest to other project.

well they will figure it out i bet. but thanks any way for forced cpu, solution, but not funny if you run more project then mine 3 atm.
but as you all guess thats why i want WCG take atleast 6+ always.

( ps dont forget other pc also so its actual 12+ cpu's and i bet then it do matter that what we want our resource to goto.

thanks again.

Re: multi project issue ( resource share issue )

sorry i was to fast , nope it dont work like that, it most have been a cross switch that kick in, bonic setting is all client

there is no controll to tell that app 1 cpu only. ( then i do it its all bonic and pc only use 1 cpu for all projects.

Re: multi project issue ( resource share issue )

This MIGHT help you; quoted from Client Configuration (without the square brackets; those can't be in the file):

<app_config>
<app>
<name>Application_Name</name>
<max_concurrent>1</max_concurrent>
<report_results_immediately/>
<fraction_done_exact/>

**Omitted**

<project_max_concurrent>N</project_max_concurrent>
<report_results_immediately/>
</app_config>

What you're looking for is the "project max concurrent" flag (for simplicity's sake, you would place this directly above the closing <app_config> tag.

Simply create an app_config.xml file for each project, put it in the directory and be sure to include that tag. Something like this, I think (I don't use one on my machines now but I have for other projects previously):

<app_config>
<app>
<name>ARP1</name>
<max_concurrent>1</max_concurrent>
</app>

<app>
<name>MCM1</name>
<max_concurrent>1</max_concurrent>
</app>
...
</app_config>

That one is for one task per subproject; this might be closer to what you want:
<app_config>
<app>
...
</app>

<app>
...
</app>
<project_max_concurrent>1</project_max_concurrent>
</app_config>

*quick addition: I don't think any of the projects you mentioned have apps that support 2+cores/task; so limiting 7 tasks per project, i.e, would mean only 7 cores in use

Re: multi project issue ( resource share issue )

yeah i get it, bonic manager need a update in settings on each project, surely it was never ment to be this way new added project take way more then allowed, we might still want support other main project.
but then i think of it WCG might want to suggest better handle or they will suffer from other project. take all cpu.
