Issues with Credit

I have a completed task where the claimed credit seems incredibly off to me.

ARP1_ 0002112_ 000_ 1-- Linux LinuxMint Linux Mint 19.1 Tessa [4.15.0-50-generic|libc 2.27 (Ubuntu GLIBC 2.27-3ubuntu1)] 727 Valid 10/30/19 00:57:30 10/30/19 22:19:14 19.39 31.7 / 280.0

ARP1_ 0002112_ 000_ 0-- Linux Ubuntu Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS [4.15.0-66-generic|libc 2.27 (Ubuntu GLIBC 2.27-3ubuntu1)] 727 Valid 10/30/19 00:50:22 10/30/19 17:41:20 14.62 528.3 / 280.0

My machine is the one with the _1 task. It's a ryzen 1700 processor with 16 gigs of ram, so safe to say that claiming 31.7 credits for 19.39 hours of crunching seems low. While I don't care about points that much, it also seems unfair to the other cruncher in this case, as their credit granted was halved. Is this a bug or a feature? And if it's a bug, is there a current estimate for when it will be fixed?

Really excited about the new project!

Re: Issues with Credit

More info: looks like credit drop off occurs around 20 hrs. To compare:

full credit of 479.1 requested after 19.91 hrs: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/device/....do?workunitId=1342963138

credit of 31.7 requested after 21.86 hrs: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/device/....do?workunitId=1342810336

These both came from a system that shouldn't be terrible (Epyc 7301 processor, 1 gig memory per thread)

Re: Issues with Credit

This credit issue has come up before. If I recall correctly, it is a feature designed to thwart cheating. My memory is hazy as to the rationale, but I think it involved manipulation of cpu time. My guess is that with the length of these work units we will be seeing this behavior more often. Perhaps the techs have some fix, like raising the threshold for when this behavior kicks in.
Cheers

Re: Issues with Credit

Same here after less than 15 hours (more precise: 14 hours and 40 minutes) of crunching, while at first my _1 task was awarded 31.7 credit (222 points), my wingman got 413.8 credit and we ended up both getting 222.7 credit (1559 points):

workunitId=1342810352
Result Name OS AVN Status Sent Time Due / Return Time CPUh Claimed/Granted

And the next one, after 15 hours and 15 minutes of hard labour … (workunitId=1342810347)

Re: Issues with Credit

IIRC, if host A requests 400 credits and host B requests 600, then (assuming the task is valid), 500 is awarded. I don't remember where, but I did read that the distribution at least on Grid is specifically to prevent cheating.

I know that WUProp is unmaintained because people were cheating by creating 100+ hosts on one computer to run the non-intensive app. Is that why we have it here?

EDIT: Silly web scripts. That definitely looks like a miscalculation in the way credits are assigned. Perhaps try to see if every _1 or _0 task gets significantly more/less than the other. Maybe it's just a wrong decimal point in the code.

Re: Issues with Credit

I have a _1 work unit (15.01 hours) that claimed 479.1 and got 440.6.
I have a _3 work unit (17.91 hours) that claimed 31.7 and got 201.7.

Result Name CPU Time (hours) Claimed/ Granted BOINC Credit
ARP1_ 0002163_ 000_ 1-- 15.01 479.1 / 440.6
ARP1_ 0002148_ 000_ 3-- 17.91 31.7 / 201.7

I wonder what the root cause is.

Re: Issues with Credit

I have returned several ARP1 WUs averaging ~30-32 hoiurs. They are giving about 15 points per hour. Below is one which took 30 hours and claimed 467.8 points. This is much better than I saw with the Betas.

ARP1_ 0002397_ 000_ 1--
...
Valid
10/30/19 05:09:29
10/31/19 11:39:02
30.00
456.5 / 467.8

Re: Issues with Credit

You were lucky.. the chopper has kicked in for others... 280 is the flat number being awarded.

Re: Issues with Credit

Working on a fix for this now. It should fix this for all projects. I'll let you know when it is published.

Thanks,

Re: Issues with Credit

Thanks. BTW, is the max credit awarded for each task is 600 BOINC pts? What will be the new max limit per task after you have changed it?
