Re: Build Science Apps With Newer GLIBC or at least disable Virtual Syscalls

I hope this helps give a bit of insight into what is happening on the backend.

Yes it does! Thanks for the insight/update!

Re: Build Science Apps With Newer GLIBC or at least disable Virtual Syscalls

Thank you, Uplinger! The details are much appreciated.

FYI: the workaround in Linux is pretty all-or-nothing. Meaning if members want to turn off the legacy support for emulating virtual syscalls, it's off for the whole system. So if members participate in both SCC1 and HSTB and SCC1's binary is updated, then HSTB will start error'ing out. The workaround for members would be to only receive SCC1 work and unselect HSTB.

This is still wonderful, and I'll happily beta test the new SCC1 binary on Debian Linux for you. When Ubuntu and RedHat/CentOS turn off legacy support, you'll likely see more users complaining of errors, so it's good to get this off the plate.

But thanks nonetheless. I'll take any forward progress and good news. I do realize WCG is a small team, so thanks for juggling everything on your board. Wish there was a way for members to give their IT skills on either a volunteer or paid basis to take share some of the burden.

Re: Build Science Apps With Newer GLIBC or at least disable Virtual Syscalls

Hi Keith,
the background information is really important for some of the contributors, in particular because some people have the feeling to be "neglected" by WCG.
It is obviously not the case, however this feeling remains persistent and seems to grow over the years.
I guess that many people do not imagine what represents the daily operation of such a platform like WCG with such a small team, especially because no software is perfect and debugging of on-going operational issues can be time consuming wink
Indeed, in order to improve the communication to the members, a "technical blog" - within the same perspective than the article released last week "behind the scene" - would be valuable.
It must not cost much work, just putting some technical information at one dedicated place with some regular updates; e.g. an overall (high level) on-going to-do list showing some progresses, delays, etc.
Cheers,
Yves

Yves,

I'll bring it up with the team and see if this seems possible.

Thanks,
