I'm seeing more and more users that don't allow their user name to be seen. Stats simply say "Anonymous". Considering how fast these users are climbing through the ranks they're either Universities or someone using corporate computers to crunch.
----------------------------------------I've made it clear in the past how I feel about these kinds of users stats being ranked along side those of us who have pay for all of our own equipment and power compared to those that are letting someone else foot the bill. The "Anonymous" users stats should not be displayed at all. If you can't have the courtesy to display a name then you shouldn't get the privilege of bumping others from their position.
One drop raises the sea.

Anonymous are contributing, like it or not. They get to have their ranking on their My contribution page as well i.e. what you see is just a placeholder. To me the summary data could be shown too in that top 5000 listing... nobody's privacy is getting violated by showing them under the 'anonymous' moniker. At least you'd be able to guesstimate how you stack up in whilst plotting your chances of overtaking or being overtaken.
----------------------------------------More disturbingly in the reverse is, that those who do not want to show their data publicly, can't have access to their export data either in private. Preposterous. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Sep 22, 2019 12:22:48 PM] |

This is a difficult topic. Everyone has a right to privacy, that has to be a given. But you might think that using a moniker here that you use nowhere else would be suitably private. However, back when I was using (a) computer(s) that was/were supplied by someone else there were rules about how one was allowed to identify oneself, and if I were still in that situation now then I would most likely switch on the anonymous flag too.
----------------------------------------Now, while you might think that that reinforces the comment about "other people paying", it does NOT mean other people's effort. Taking an active part in WCG is not without time cost. Sure, it doesn't necessarily need much, but at the very least it means installing and setting up BOINC on machine that you have access to. So I say, let these people have their fun. If they can identify themselves within the stats, why not? And I agree that anyone should be able to download their own data without hindrance, provided that they have to identify themselves to do so. Why should setting the anonymous flag affect that? I don't see the logic! [Edit: fixed a typo.] [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Sep 22, 2019 5:05:44 PM] |
