Hi.
have this old computer that is running BunsenLabs Helium, 32 bit. general specs: CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2000+ RAM: 1 Gb I have the idea of just use this computer as a backup file server on my home network, so low spec is not an issue for that use. I have tried to install BOINC using Synaptic Package manager, seemingly installing without problems. The first issue : Shortcut to Bonc doesn't appear into the menu (but that is fixable). But when trying to run BOINC (from Terminal) I get this error:
Except this is a very low spec computer, I really cannot understand the above output. Is it somehow the hw specs that itself is too low or not supported, or is it more likely to be an issue about Debian support ? |

If you have installed BOINC from the repository, version 7.6.33 installs in /var/lib/boinc-client and expects to run as a service (daemon) for user boinc, not as a user-space application as it might on Windows. (The newest clients install to /var/lib/boinc, making a symlink to boinc-client if it it is already present from an older version so that data is conserved.)
----------------------------------------To find out if it is starting automatically (as it should), do ps -ef | grep boincto see what, if anything, is going on. For example: alanb@acer2:~$ ps -ef | grep boincNote the ownership of the boinc client and the two WCG tasks running here... If it is running, you should be able to interact with it using BOINC Manager (which should also have been installed from the repository) - no need to use sudo. Hope this helps... Good luck - Al. P.S. I'm on XUbuntu 18.04 and using BOINC 7.14.2 [Edit 1 times, last edit by alanb1951 at Apr 9, 2019 1:49:04 AM] |

AuthenticAMD AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2000+ I have an old system with a CPU from the same AMD family. It is running a variant of Redhat Enterprise 6 server. The same version OS and same version of BOINC run OK on more modern machines to process WCG work. On this particular machine with the AMD XP CPU, BOINC runs OK - it will download successfully WCG WUs - but all fall and abort as soon as they start to run. Tried all the different projects available. As this machine is only a backup turned on periodically to update the stored backups, it was not worth the time and effort to go any further. I suspect the old AMD doesn't support some more recently added CPU instructions required for WCG WU processing...

Athlon XP 2000+ does not support SSE2 instructions. I remember seeing something in the forums indicating SSE2 is a requirement for all WCG projects. I had one of these CPUs a long time ago and retired it due to heat and power usage while crunching.

Thank you for answering.
You're probably right - the missing sse2 instruction make the computer unable to run updated web browsers as well (most web browsers won't even start - if launched from Terminal won't give anu clues that it is the lack of sse2 that is causing it to fail start). So I go with lack of sse2 to be the most likely cause of this. |
