L2 Cache 512KB vs. 1MB and DDR2 vs DDR Memory

Not considering processor speed:

Does anyone know if 512KB of level 2 cache is sufficient for the WCG project to process optimally or would 1MB level 2 cache allow the processing to be more efficient (faster) or would 1MB Level 2 cache be considered superfluous?

Does anyone know if the WCG project is able to utilize DDR2 PC4200 memory or DDR2 PC5300 memory more effieciently (faster) or would DDR PC2700 or DDR PC3200 memory be shock just as efficient?

Thanks,

Dan Replogle

Re: L2 Cache 512KB vs. 1MB and DDR2 vs DDR Memory

Hello dreplogle,

The biggest difference is between the AMD64 and the Pentium 4 Netburst architecture. The Pentium 4 architecture requires far more L2 cache to operate efficiently. I started wrestling with a cheap Sempron 3100+ Monday evening, trying to get it set up the way I want it to work, using the OEM programs that came with it (point of pride not to copy licensed programs that I have paid for. . . arrghh!). The L2 cache is only 256 KB instead of the standard AMD64 512 KB, the 64-bit instructions are disabled, it has an on-chip memory controller (refills cache faster than the north bridge of a Pentium 4 but has been cut down to single channel rather than the AMD64 Dual channel controller). Despite all these constraints, it should run faster at 1.8 Ghz than my old 1.92 Ghz Barton AMD 2600+. But we shall see. But if you are using a Pentium 4 or equivalent, try to get at least 512 KB L2 cache.

All this is just my opinion, which is very inexpert. smile

mycrofth,

As always, thank you very much for your opinion. It seems you know more than a little about everything.
