I have just had to restore my 15" MacBook Pro from a time mechine backup. Now two instances of the same machine appear on my Device statistics. The machine that appears to be running has 8 threads and has downloaded only 10WUs and will not load more (saying that this computer has reached its limit of WUs) The machine that appears to be not running has 570 WUs in progress which will obviously time out if not crunched. Can I consolidate the two instances of the same computer or will time sort things out by eventually all of the non-operational machine instance WUs timing out?
----------------------------------------HELP please

Don't worry about the 570 instances. They will time out and be re-issued to other machines. The reason you only have 10 WU's running is your machine has not yet reached trusted status. This will be resolved in a short time as your machine returns valid results.

Thanks Sgt. Joe It's really weird because it almost appears that the 'old' machine is still running. It's a shame because I had run up 36 CPU years on that machine and now I have to start from scratch again

What is still concerning is that for some reason the BOINC/WCG server thinks your device is a new device instead of recognizing it as the same device.
----------------------------------------I assume your MacBook has the same hostname, OS, and hardware configuration as before the restoration from backup. I just read your next post. "15-MacBook-Pro.local" is identical, yet there are two copies. I do hope the devices get merged, but I'm not sure how BOINC uniquely identifies devices.

Follow-up after doing some web searching and reading...particularly this thread on the Einstein@home forums: Re-install BOINC keeping the same host ID.
----------------------------------------On other BOINC projects [other than WCG], one can simply go into the web interface and click into Devices and click "Merge" and manually merge duplicate devices, but I don't believe WCG implemented this BOINC feature on the website. So that leaves us with this: In the BOINC data directory (on Windows, it's C:\ProgramData\BOINC\ and in macOS it may be under /Library/Application Support/BOINC Data/) there is a file called client_state.xml. Inside that file is a section called <host_info> with a tag called <host_cpid>32 characters here</host_cpid> with a unique hexadecimal identifier. I would imagine that restoring the entire BOINC data directory, especially the client_state.xml file, would force the server to match up to the old device instead of creating a new device. It would be nice for WCG to implement the "merge" functionality though. Edited to add: Perhaps the <host_cpid> isn't how individual projects like WCG recognize devices. Inside the <project> section for World Community Grid, there's a <hostid>7-digit number</hostid> that appears to be unique for each device. I think that may be how devices are uniquely identified. Either way, restoring the original client_state.xml file in its entirety will copy over the original values. Edit yet again: In case a backup doesn't exist, it appears like the hostid # can be retrieved from WCG. Go to Device Statistics which lists all Devices. Then hover over the "Device Name" for the device you want. The URL will look like https: // www. worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/device/viewDeviceStatHistory.do?deviceId=7-digit number here&deviceType=B
