Thanks everyone. I tried MCM again - one WU arrived with a 10 day deadline and one with 7 days. So my decision: I'll only subscribe to projects which arrive with the standard 10 day deadline and computing can reliably complete within that time. No point in warming the planet for nothing! Even better would be for WCG to enforce its deadline on projects, but hey, as Stephen Covey said: circles of concern vs circles of control

MCM WU takes about 3h on modern CPU. It shouldn't take more than 4-5 even on a laptop. If you cant crunch one in a week then not the deadline is a problem :)

MCM deadlines have always been 7 days IIRC. Most projects are 10 days. FAHB is 1 day with the new architecture. Betas are short deadlines as well. And re-sends are about 3.5 day deadlines.
----------------------------------------This may be good to place in a FAQ section or something (one that's not obsolete!), but it's otherwise learned through personal experience.

Here is what I have from my results status page for standard deadlines, they agree with what's been said. I don't currently have any reissued WUs:
----------------------------------------Research Project Standard deadline FightAIDS@Home - VINA...................inactive FightAIDS@Home - Phase 2..................1 day Help Stop TB.................................. 10 days Mapping Cancer Markers .................. 7 days Microbiome Immunity Project ............10 days OpenZika .........................................10 days Outsmart Ebola Together..................inactive Smash Childhood Cancer ..................10 days [Edit 1 times, last edit by Macroman at Dec 4, 2018 6:28:47 AM] |

The most successful BOINC project - Seti@home uses deadlines of 8 weeks or so! - they must have some reason for this ;) Hi mderrick, I don't know the reason for such a long deadline (about 2 months). For WCG projects, there is some good reasons not to wait too long.
Back to your initial remark, I do not understand why a 7 day deadline is too short for you considering that the required computation time for a WU will surely not exceed 5 to 8 hours (the latter on a very slow machine). Did I miss something? Yves |

Yves, kva. Refer to my earlier posts re tThrottle, cooked laptops and natural cooling for explanation of need for 10 days ;)

Even with throttle, from 5 hours to 10 days ... it is about 2% CPU load instead of 100%.
----------------------------------------I think that you manage your cooling problem in the wrong way. You should maybe clean the machine and especially the cooling system. Cheers, Yves |

Good math Yves! My laptop runs 4 threads 12-16 hrs a day at about 10-20% so you did well. For nearly 15 years I've only used laptops (now a Surface Pro 3 hybrid) so never really wanted to open them up myself ... happy to make a small contribution to WCG and Seti, use tThrottle to keep the temp at a level where the internal fan does not operate. SP3 that's 55degC, 2nd machine Toshiba Aspire it's 48degC. Get more computing done in winter, of course :)

Hi mderrick,
----------------------------------------on my side, I would not operate Boinc on mobile devices (neither phone nor tablet) even if I know that many people do it. At the other side, I am desperately waiting for a real Raspberry Pi support based on Raspian, since I do completely reject Android as an alternative. In the RPi case, I would operate the device with an additional cooling system to avoid to destroy the device. Cheers, Yves |
