I upgraded to your new version and it wiped out all my projects and couldn't re-install them --- had to uninstall it and re-install BOINC and then add one by one my projects....why go to a WC Grid based format when I have used BOINC for all my projects and they work fine? Several scenarios were not mentioned such as, if a user previously chose to point the data directory to be in a different location than default, nor the differential of services versus user and vice versa. Spanner in wheel conditions. |

@lavaflow - the data directory seems to be an issue and would explain some of the behavior people are reporting (i.e. projects appearing to disappear).
----------------------------------------Testing shows: If you install WCG 7.2 and set a custom data directory then upgrade to WCG 7.14 , then it will remember your data directory. If you install BOINC 7.12 and set a custom data directory, then upgrade to BOINC 7.14 then it will remember your data directory. However, if you go from WCG 7.2 -> BOINC 7.14 or BOINC 7.12 -> WCG 7.14 (and I'll bet if you crossover between the other branded installers) then the installer goes to the default data directory and you have to manually select your custom data directory during installation. We are looking into if this is something that can be changed. This behavior has been present in both the BOINC and WCG installers going back at least to 7.2. It would be a great help to us if anyone reporting this issue could let us know if they are in fact using a custom data directory, and if they are, if setting the data directory manually during installation to your custom location makes the installation behave as expected. I use stock Boinc 7.14.2. the WCG client is just a reskin of the icons; it shouldn't mess anything up. That's odd.

Can I suggest that a download link be placed in the web page to which a user is directed within the Notices showing on the BOINC Manager, namely the link: more...
----------------------------------------I read that page, but then wondered "where on earth does one download the software?" I eventually found it by coming to this forum and logging in! ![]() Maybe I misread the notice and the link is somewhere there.... ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by craisin at Oct 25, 2018 12:30:57 PM] |

I use stock Boinc 7.14.2. the WCG client is just a reskin of the icons; it shouldn't mess anything up. That's odd. Finally figured out the issue. It applies to both BOINC and all of the branded installers. The 32 bit Windows installer reads and writes its registry keys to Computer/HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Wow6432Node/Space Sciences Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley The 64 bit Windows installer reads and writes its registry keys to Computer/HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Space Sciences Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley. This behavior is done by the operating system transparently to the application. See https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/desk...tion-data-in-the-registry So if you are upgrading from 64 bit version to the next 64 bit version, it reads the registry settings (like data directory and installation directory) from what you selected last time you installed. Same thing if you are going from 32 bit -> 32 bit version. However, if you cross between versions from 32 bit to 64 bit or from 64 bit to 32 bit then since the registry settings from your previous installation are not found, then you get the defaults. We are looking at options now. Note: This isn't to say you can't cross over - just that you need to reselect your installation options manually when you upgrade. Note2: Most people go with the defaults and these people won't notice any issue at all. [Edit 1 times, last edit by knreed at Oct 25, 2018 3:47:26 PM] |

We are going to modify the installer so that if it doesn't find existing registry entries under the 32 bit location it will then check to see if there are settings under the 64 bit location. That will allow the installer to pick up settings that someone used if they had installed 64 bit BOINC.
----------------------------------------This will handle most of the cases and be an improvement from the current situation. [Edit 1 times, last edit by knreed at Oct 26, 2018 2:25:42 PM] |

The client has been updated with this feature. People who have only had the 64 bit client installed will now have the client correctly pick up their previous installation settings when they install our version. |

Like most programs just install the new version after stopping the current one.
----------------------------------------If possible wait for checkpoint or set "no new tasks" and let tasks complete. Paul.
