II was not told that I'd be left with a non-functional BOINC. I'd like to know why the client wouldn't work on your system after the update to the WCG 7.14 version. Our test installation scenarios included the following upgrade paths BOINC 7.2 - WCG 7.14 BOINC 7.10 -> WCG 7.14 BOINC 7.12 -> WCG 7.14 BOINC 7.14 -> WCG 7.14 WCG 7.2 -> WCG 7.14 WCG 7.2 -> BOINC 7.14 WCG 7.14 -> BOINC 7.14 We we had success in these paths. If the path upgrade didn't work for you, I'd very much like to understand what happened. If you are willing to help us investigate, that would be a great help. If you are willing, then can you do the following:
This gets us into a known state. If you have the issue again, then look in C:/ProgramData/BOINC and send the files stderrdae.txt and stdoutdae.txt to support@worldcommunitygrid.org and reference this forum thread. Thanks and sorry for your issues! [Edit 1 times, last edit by knreed at Oct 23, 2018 8:15:28 PM] |

Ok ... Remembering that the BETA Android is BOINC not WCG and is Ver 7.14.1
----------------------------------------And you are accepting the normal BETA risks (ie: all problems are your problems) To get the BETA version of BOINC for Android see below. --------------- To get the beta version of an app you have to have the public version installed. To check if an app has a beta version available: Open the Google Play Store Google Play. Find the app you want to check and tap it to go to the app detail page. Look to see if the app detail page mentions a beta version. Make sure you scroll down as this information could be at the bottom of the page. If it’s available, tap I'm in and then Join. ----------------- Bill F ![]() ![]() |

Over the past 4 years the BOINC versions have incorporated a lot of upgrades and code enhancements to fully utilize the capabilities of the new CPU's released in the past 5 years and in some cases CPU's older than that were not being utilized to their full features. Yes a lot of code has been added for MAC and security has been improved as well.
----------------------------------------Even if you are not running a MAC or GPU related work there is plenty of good stuff in 7.14.2 for all of you. Bill F ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Bill F at Oct 25, 2018 1:14:19 AM] |

Will there be a x64 version of the WCG software or will it just stay x86 (32-bit).
I noticed from the install paths that it goes to the PF(x86) folder only and I'm currently on 7.12.1 (x64) version. Knowing that, I cancelled the install and decided to post this question on the forum before going forward with either this version or just go to the BOINC site to get the native 64 bit upgrade. |

Will there be a x64 version of the WCG software or will it just stay x86 (32-bit). I imagine that the 32 bit version of the client being offered by WCG is to allow support for people that are running older 32 bit versions of Windows. WCG tech would have access to more statistics as to how many users are running 32 and 64 bit versions of Windows and I guess this would affect their decision on what they offer for download. Also, I don't know if WCG compile their own BOINC client and, if they do, whether their build system is configured for 64 bit builds. I don't know any reason why WCG couldn't offer a choice of 32 or 64 bit versions for download though as a 64 bit version is on the BOINC site and I had to search to find the 32 bit version. Having said all that, as far as I understand, the BOINC client tends not to do much work and just manages processes which actually do the work so don't know how much benefit there is from the 64 bit client. |

As far as I am aware, there is no benefit to running the 32 bit vs the 64 bit client (I think that there is some difference in the benchmark scores for credit computations - but other than that I'm not aware of a difference).
The 32 bit client will correctly identify that it is running on a 64 bit system and will then download and run the 64 bit science applications. It does matter that a 64 bit machine is able to run 64 bit science applications because there is a difference there. But that is ok since the 32 bit client will run the 64 bit science applications without issue. I don't have data to support this, but I suspect most user who have an opinion about running the 32 bit client vs the 64 bit client also know that we are running the BOINC software and just go get the 64 bit client from https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php Because we don't have a reason to offere both and because for users feel it is important, there is a way for them to get a 64 bit client, we chose to slightly simplify the user experience on the download page by simply having one windows version. This makes it easier for users who are less technical and less aware of the differences between 32 bit and 64 bit. |

There's no benefit in a 64 bit client build as the core client does not in any way affect the performance or throughput of the science apps, which may be 64 bit too, both are supported by the 32 bit client. If there were Windows installs that were set to pure 64 bit, it would be needed, but the first requiring this has still to write in.

As far as I can tell, this seems to be an update with more Mac support and much more GPU support/fixes, and their advertisement of how it will save 1 step during a fresh install. There is no direct, thorough comparison of 7.2 and 7.14 (4+ years of development and more than 12 version changes). This is the WCG site...not BOINC...WCG does not support GPU at all for any projects and it appears it never will. So why is WCG pushing this version for WCG users? WCG should spend time a)investing in GPU based project development and b)figuring out how to get WCG/BOINC to run on the billions (literally) of iOS devices (even though they would crunch relatively slow compared to average consumer CPUs of the 2016). If there are 2 billion iOS devices and WCG convinced 1 million devices to participate, that would only be .05% of 2 billion devices. Currently there are just over 4 million devices running WCG so this small iOS bump would yield a 25% increase in overall device participation. An iOS and Android app called Dreamlab has been around for about a year (I believe) that competes on the same multi-project principles of WCG and BOINC. With the world moving so fast out of traditional computers and into "mobile" devices, I think WCG/BOINC is shooting their own foot doing nothing for development on iOS. 1st of all, Hi. Haven't met you before. A) Then to tell you, as from WCG is concerned, they ARE NOT relevant to GPU computing. It's the scientists who need to use GPUs in their projects. For WCG one WU is as same as another WU. The just distribute it & maintain the servers. B) iOS app has been suggested many times, check here post 2y ago: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewpostinthread?post=532692 Also, some ideas have been questioned 3y ago on Git/hub for BOINC development: https://github.com/BOINC/boinc/issues/1376 But thank you for Dreamlab, will check it out for iOS devices. ![]() |

I upgraded to your new version and it wiped out all my projects and couldn't re-install them --- had to uninstall it and re-install BOINC and then add one by one my projects....why go to a WC Grid based format when I have used BOINC for all my projects and they work fine?
