If you do not have any in progress (or if you have fewer in progress than your limit) then mip1 will be considered for sending your computer just like any other app that you have selected. Thus it doesn't guarantee that you will have that many running, but is simply an upper limit on how many you could have running. I've been running it at one for days and this is not what I observe. I only get one a day. I've even aborted all other WCG WUs before it and still another MIP WU does not come until the next day. That's fine with me I'm just telling what I see. Since MIP is an L3 cache hog I doubt I'll ever run more than one. ![]() ...KRI please cancel all shadow-banning[Edit 3 times, last edit by Aurum420 at Oct 23, 2018 2:25:02 PM] |

Limit the number of MIPs crunched at once to the desired number on every machine by using app_config. Then limit the number of units a pc can have in the device profile. This can be higher than the number in app_config, should only be lower than unlimited, so the workunit queue does not run full of MIPs and leave most cpu threads unused thereafter, which is a common problem when limiting MIP units by app_config. Here is the app_config.xml that I use: <app_config> Place it in the project folder; i.e., Window 64-bit: C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\www.worldcommunitygrid.org Ubuntu: /var/lib/boinc-client/projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org => Then, read in the app_config, or re-start BOINC to activate it. I limit them to two at a time on my 8-core machines (i7-4770, etc.) and three at a time on my 16-core Ryzen. That helps to keep the run times low, and also prevents errors on the Ryzen. The combination of using app_config to limit the concurrently running and a somewhat higher number in the website profile, say 2 and 4, ensures that the 2 in wait are always somewhat aged, so they will usually get starting priority on the client. Of course the buffer has to be tuned to get this spiel to work out best. |

I use the default buffer (0.1 + 0.5 days) on my Ryzen 1700 (Ubuntu 18.04.1), and allow all the WCG projects to run. That usually keeps me in around 8 to 14 hours of work, with a good variety of types of work units. I have found (thus far) that I need to allow the maximum number (16) of MIP to be downloaded at a time to keep me crunching around 2 (with a limit of 3). That should work well enough. If you do all projects, select MIP1 as the sole project plus the "if there is no work...". You'd not risk of the feeder going flippant, dump the 16, and will most always have the desired number of MIP1 in buffer/running, rather than the 'here's hoping' scenario.

Would it not be great if every science had this feature? We have made this setting available for all projects (it will also automatically appear for future projects we launch). |
