There goes my dual Xeon build on SuperMicro mobos. I guess I'll have to do with Ryzen 1700x instead. Build will be a lot cheaper since generic Mobo for AMD is a lot cheaper and likely more secure than the Supermicro ones.

My initial assumption seems to be confirmed by the current reports: this news is a fake.
Based on my own knowledge regarding hardware development and design, such an attack looks very improbable since it would be very complicated to modify a print design without causing troubles and without being discovered. A firmware manipulation is much "easier".
Additionally, the delay between the supposed discovery and its publication is very curious and it is not pleading for veracity.
