this looks interesting... 4 cores, 15w consumption https://www.pcmag.com/news/360052/extremely-c...-2-linux-pc-launches-june another review says the Pro version is 50% faster yet $45 cheaper than the previous version.

It is...but $300...for those money you can get several quad-core mobiles. ;) yes but you know some WCG programs are not compatible with Android, like Mapping Cancer Markers. Mobiles require modification or careful monitoring if you want to run 24/7 but dont want to pop the battery (like my 8 core moto g just did). The Pro 2 runs Linux 4 cores at 1.5 ghz but only sucks 15 w - compare that to a 4 core desktop or laptop. Look at those heat sinks on this little unit, running 24/7 should be no problem. According to the manufacturer - who is Linux Mint's manufacturing partner - they dont load it with bloatware and also say "Despite the higher performance and similar power consumption, MBM2 runs much cooler than its predecessor thanks to completely new thermal design with larger dissipation surface, better thermal coupling and specialized conduction cooling for the storage device." fanless silence, Linux efficiency and small form factor would appeal to me. https://fit-iot.com/web/ There are cheaper alternatives that run 4 cores at 2ghz if $300 hurts you wallet, only 10w too. Amazon has Linux Mini PC Ubuntu, bay trail j1900 quad core 2.42 GHz, 4GB RAM 32GB SSD 300m WIFI Mini PC for only $189.I have always found Linux a bit intimidating but the lower electricity bills from these little mini pcs might force me think again. ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by Glen David Short at May 30, 2018 2:50:10 AM] |

I have always found Linux a bit intimidating but the lower electricity bills from these little mini pcs might force me think again. If this box is running Mint, it is pretty user friendly with the Mate desktop. I have not tried other desktop environments, but it made me feel like it was like Windows. There is a bit of a learning curve, but it still worked well. You can install it onto a flash drive or run it live off a DVD, so I would download the ISO and give it a whirl. |

I have always found Linux a bit intimidating but the lower electricity bills from these little mini pcs might force me think again. If your idea for one of these boxes is "set it and forget it" then it'll take some research to find the codes to type to setup boinc on it, if there is no GUI, but then you are done. I learned just enough to do that to a Linux server, kept the notes just in case, and haven't touched it since.![]() |

Linux Mint has one of the easiest Boinc setups, just install it using the package manager and it is ready to go, there are no extra terminal commands needed. Other distros like OpenSuse, Fedora and Antergos that I have tried do need extra commands to configure permissions and setup systemctl jobs.

I have always found Linux a bit intimidating but the lower electricity bills from these little mini pcs might force me think again. Try having a look at the latest ubuntu build codenamed 'Bionic Beaver' (yes it's really called bionic beaver) that's got steadily more windows like, the GUI is now very slick and easy to use and on the plus side you'll find a BIG increase in performance over windows. Should you wish you can now specify a minimal install to avoid a load of stuff you don't need and software is easily found and installed from the ubuntu software app built right into the desktop or from the terminal if like me you prefer to go old school. Oh and it's free and always will be. |
