Hello,
I hope to find out what the Ryzen vs Intel performance is on this application on both Linux and Windows. Is it simply the difference in IPC between them or is there something greater that could affect the performance? Also is there a large performance difference between Linux and Windows for this application as well? |

64-bit Linux is significantly faster than 64-bit Windows in the VINA sciences such as FightAIDS@home phase 1, OpenZika, Outsmart Ebola Together, Smash Childhood Cancer. 50-60% faster.

Now this is why I made this thread. Thank you very much, you have made my Ryzen 8 cores 50-60% faster each.

I run MIP, SCC1 and ZIKA jobs on 64 bit Win10 PCs with over clocked CPUs.
An i5 4670K 4 core / 4 thread CPU running 100% at 4.0GHz completes ~95 jobs a day. An R5 1600 6 core / 12 thread CPU running 100% at 3.6GHz completes ~140 jobs a day. On a per core basis, the i5 returns 23.8 jobs a day and the Ryzen returns 23.3 jobs a day. This 2% difference is less than the 11% difference in clock frequency, so it appears that the Ryzen R5 1600 is slightly faster than the Intel i5 4670K. Both PCs have 2 x 8GB of RAM, although the i5 is using DDR3 and the R5 1600 is using DDR4. |

Zika went from about 90min to 55min on my TR1950x just by moving from Win10 to Ubuntu.

I want a Ryzen for my new PC! Now, you're telling me I have to put Linux on it! It is awful only the first half-dozen times, but gets easier thereafter. PS - Wait for Ubuntu 18.04, due out next month. It will support Ryzen better, and more importantly have support for the M.2 SSDs, and probably other changes that will be useful for the new motherboards. I'm running an M.2 on Ubuntu 17.10 and I'm not having problems with the hard drive.

I'm running an M.2 on Ubuntu 17.10 and I'm not having problems with the hard drive. That's what I do too (actually Lubuntu 17.10.1). That is because 16.04 does not recognize the M.2 drive. However, I manage my PC's over the LAN, and due to the brilliance of the Ubuntu project adopting Wayland (whatever that is) on 17.10, the X11 server does not work and so I can not connect to them from my Windows 7 PC. One solution was to use the XOrg server for the desktop, but even that does not allow for automatic login of X11 and I have to do it manually each time I reboot. The solution (temporary) is to use Lubuntu, which stays with XOrg by default rather than Wayland. If you are new to this business and all of that is rather obscure, the better solution is to wait for Ubuntu 18.04. They go back to XOrg there, having learned (a little) from their mistake. You will have enough to deal with getting it to work. [Edit 2 times, last edit by Jim1348 at Mar 13, 2018 9:28:41 AM] |

That is because 16.04 does not recognize the M.2 drive. I disagree, since I have several Ubuntu hosts booting from M.2 or nvme SSD. M.2 since 14.04 and nvme since 16.04 (I did not have to check it with 14.04). Cheers, Yves |
