Re: Microsoft update -> dead in the water

Try doing a cold boot and then ctrl alt del a few times if it gets stuck.

Re: Microsoft update -> dead in the water

"Inaccessible boot device" literally means that the hard drive with your OS is inaccessible. It usually indicates a hard disk failure has occurred or is imminent, but I suppose a loose or bad SATA/IDE cable could cause it as well. Perhaps if your OS was so corrupt it wasn't recognized as bootable.

Personally, if I had another bootable drive, i'd connect that, boot from it, and try to salvage as much data as possible before proceeding.

Following the corrupt OS theory, if you have a windows USB or disk around you could try running a repair on windows?

Re: Microsoft update -> dead in the water

I am given an option to open a command line box and can enter commands. So I am not sure that the problem is with a bad hard drive. It also seems that there is a lot of chatter about the same problem and I think it has to do only with the update and not the actual hardware.

Some people have had success with rolling back the updates, but I have not had that luck.

Maybe we should thank Intel for pushing inadequate kernel patches under the cover of Spectre and Meltdown ? ...
I very well understand Linus Torwald's statement on January 21st 2018. We did not experience such troubles with kernel patches since decades.
The crazy results of MS inadequate behaviour with Windows updates and of unstable Linux kernel patches is that I stop to update the OS of my systems : since a too long time for Windows, since a couple of week for Linux, expecting a better and more reliable time.
However, excepted on one machine, I do operate W7 only in a virtual machine, and I avoid W10. In the future, I will not have any Windows bare metal installation anymore.
Cheers,
Yves

Re: Microsoft update -> dead in the water

I hope some of the advice here has helped you, tmedve smile
Some people have had success with rolling back the updates, but I have not had that luck.
Neither have I.
I’m far from being IT-savvy but try to help, defend, and protect myself the best I can from what can wipe out my life, so at the risk of becoming the laughing stock of all you IT experts here, I’ll let you in on a low-tech method. A running computer is of course a prerequisite, and I sincerely hope you have that by now, tmedve.

I try to remember to create a ’restore-to-this-state-checkpoint’ before I download and install an update. I don’t know what it’s called on English-speaking computers, but you go
-> control panel -> system & security/safety -> security/safety & maintenance -> at the very bottom it says (translated from Danish) ’Optimize your pc without your files being affected …’
KliK that, and you’ll have the possibility to make a checkpoint on a day when you computer runs beautifully, and if something happens, you can use this checkpoint to return to this bliss.

You will somehow safeguard yourself by creating such a checkpoint before any Windows updates.
In fact, sometimes Windows creates one itself before an update, I think I have noticed, but not always.
But if an update more or less kills your computer … well, there is not much you can do except for sprinkling this pixie dust and waving a magic wand.
I made this update last night, QuantumEthos. I wouldn't say it was a breeze; it is never totally painless.
But we survived, ThinkPad and I biggrin
Does your computer live now, tmedve?

cool Re: Microsoft update -> dead in the water

Thank you QuantumEthos for the info, but it seems that I need to get my computer running to see take any action on this. I don't have any USB drives connected as some people suggested. The only USB things are for the keyboard and the wireless mouse. If I could only get the computer booted, then I might be able to stop Norton AV and try it all again. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

System restore may well work; When you do then uninstall Norton AV because of compatibility issues...

Re: Microsoft update -> dead in the water

If you do get it fixed, remove automatic updates and go to inform only. Learned this lesson many years ago. I now verify online any update before allowing it to be installed. The other issue is upgrading online. No install discs to help in situations like this. Cost more but could have helped you in this issue. Good luck.

Re: Microsoft update -> dead in the water

The only capable roll back is not the system restore functionality but to generate a system image (ideally offline image: i.e. system is down and Acronis or Clonezilla is used for generating the system image; or for Unix-based system using dd in single user mode) and to restore the system using the same tool if necessary.
Like many of us, I did never succeed to restore properly a system based on a previously generated restore point in case of large operating system update. It maybe run adequately in case of restoring a system state after a software test installation. However, in case of an important system update, it is poorly recommended to rely on the system restore functionality only.
Cheers,
Yves
