Some recent research news suggests that other flaviviruses (besides zika) may also cause birth defects. These viruses are able to reach the fetus through the placenta. They were looking at West-Nile virus and Powassan virus.
On our monthly research call with the Zika researchers we heard that they are working on two review papers, which if accepted, may appear in a few months. We will let you know in a news item when that happens. In the meantime they continue to collect World Community Grid results and are working with several laboratories to test certain promising compounds. Getting funding to obtain the compounds and test them continues to be a challenge. They hope their work may contribute to work for other flaviviruses such as dengue fever, given the similarity in their protein targets. This may also help attract further funding. |

Yes, thanks for the update Viktors - that's the kind of periodic news I think a lot of people are looking for, just a brief summary to inform us of what's happening in the background and keep the project 'alive' in people's minds/active on their CPU's.

The researchers in Brazil just received 8 compounds for lab testing. The import process apparently took a long 3 months. They might have some news about these tests in their next project update. Melina will be visiting Sean at North Carolina University. Carolina has recruited a new student to help with the project. Finally, a couple of papers have been submitted and are in the reviewing process.

I think Zika research funding could and should get a boost because Zika is just one of a large family of the Flaviviridae virus family that includes viruses causing significant impact on mankind such as Yellow Fever, Dengue, Japanese Encephalitis, West Nile disease afrom mosquito vectors not to mention a number of tick borne hemorrhagic fevers.
They also potentially could cause birth defects in addition to the other life threatening effects and morbidity already well documented. Drugs developed for Zika could be used to treat these diseases as well . That would be a huge deal! https://www.cdc.gov/vhf/index.html |

Flaviviridae
Recommend on FacebookTweetShare The Flaviviridae are a family of positive, single-stranded, enveloped RNA viruses. They are found in arthropods, (primarily ticks and mosquitoes), and can occasionally infect humans. Members of this family belong to a single genus, Flavivirus, and cause widespread morbidity and mortality throughout the world. Some of the mosquitoes-transmitted viruses include: Yellow Fever, Dengue Fever, Japanese encephalitis, West Nile viruses, and Zika virus. Other Flaviviruses are transmitted by ticks and are responsible of encephalitis and hemorrhagic diseases: Tick-borne Encephalitis (TBE), Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD) and Alkhurma disease, and Omsk hemorrhagic fever. St. Louis encephalitis is also caused by a flavivirus |

Since last time, one of the two papers has been accepted and we will be making a post about it when it publishes sometime around August. The second paper is still in the review process and they are revising some parts based on the first reviewer comments.
The researchers are always looking for additional collaborators and they have recently been in touch with two potential new partners. We'll let everyone know if these discussions move forward. Melina Mottin (from LabMol in Brazil) will be visiting Sean Ekins (at Collaborations Pharmaceuticals in the North Carolina USA) later this summer. Melina will also be giving a talk at the August national meeting of the ACS (American Chemical Society) in Boston. Sean's lab is hiring a new intern who will do some work on Zika as well as Dengue. |
