Looking at a low end linode, boinc on ssh?

Hi,
So, totally new to the linux thing. I figured since so many on here use it I'd give it a shot.
Really not even sure where to start here...
I'm guessing try out Ubuntu? Any preference on version?
Is there a quick and easy way to add my project to boinc on linux without typing in a ton of commands that I very well may get wrong?
E.g. how to set preferences via cli? It is of course nearly 3 in the morning here so I may be missing something here but I'm not seeing that in the documentation. ...is there a wget command to grab the latest boinc?
Sorry for all the (I'm sure) silly questions. I just want to try out linux on something that's not my own until I get a hang on things and learn my way around it. I guess my question really is how hard is it (boinc and / or linux) to initially set up and configure for a new guy like me over SSH?
I hope this was the right forum to post this in and it is appropriate. I want (eventually) to have a few linux machines around the house to contribute (hopefully, anyway) even more to science, as I have heard there is a 30-50% increase in some though not all projects.
I of course could be overthinking all of this.

thanks!

Welcome to WCG.

If at least one of your PCs has a display you can control all via the GUI.
Ubuntu Long Term Support (LST) releases are the ones to go for.
DVD images are bootable for live session and can then install.
BOINC can be installed from repository, even in live DVD boot.
Some projects are better on Linux, some on windows.

Paul.

Re: Looking at a low end linode, boinc on ssh?

Was exactly at the same point a year ago, zero knowledge about Linux. I then decided to set up a WCG cruncher running Linux and it is really not complicated...

I would suggest Lubuntu (lubuntu.me/ ), which is a very light-weight flavour of Ubuntu. I chose the 16.04.3 LTS version (not the current 17.10). The LTS versions gets updates for 3 years, and besides the 17.10 version seems to have some serious issues with some PCs. But in theory any Linux Distro should work.

Here some descriptions what I did, specifically for Lubuntu, with other distros some things might be slightly different, found somewhere else etc.

- download the Linux image you chose
- download Linux Live USB Creator (www.linuxliveusb.com )
- create a bootable Linux stick with the Linux Live USB Creator, choose some 100 MB Persistence so you can store data & install programs in live mode if you like
- boot from the stick, you can then click the install symbol on the desktop and install on another USB stick or HDD/SSD right away, or just test it live first. Cool thing about the second approach is, you can just test it on your current system without risk
- choose system tools -> synaptic package manager and search for Boinc, mark for installation and then apply. Start the Boinc manager and the rest you should know...
- if you want to edit app_config.xml you will not have the rights to enter the directory. Type "sudo pcmanfm" in the console (which opens the file manager as admin) and navigate to /var/lib/boinc-client/projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org. In some Distros you might also right-click on the folder and choose "open as admin" or sth like that
- You might want to install Teamviewer, just download it from their site and execute the file downloaded (just double click, no console action needed...)
- temperature control: install PSensor via the Synaptics Package manager. Sadly works not with Ryzen yet, but should work with Intel stuff fine
- look under system tools -> system profiler and benchmark -> CPU to see at which clock your CPU runs. Or type "cat /proc/cpuinfo" in the console for this and more info
- find the task manager under system tools, which gives similar info as in windows (too see ram usage, CPU usage etc.)

If you have any further questions let me know, I'm glad to help!

Re: Looking at a low end linode, boinc on ssh?

Hi, everyone
Thanks for the help so far.
What I am debating is installing a distro over at https://www.linode.com/
Is there a way I can use the gui to set up and configure boinc without too much trouble or must I use the command line through ssh if I do that?
Running from USB sounds like an excellent idea, though - especially on laptops I do use but not all the time.
By chance does Lubuntu have Orca by default? It's a requirement for me since I will be using a screen reader to both install and configure.

thanks for the help so far!

Re: Looking at a low end linode, boinc on ssh?

Can't help with linode.

But configuring Boinc if you have a distro with gui running, works exactly the same way as in windows.

Lubuntu does not come with Orca. Tried to install it, but somehow didn't work because of some broken package.
I have Linux Mint 18.2 on my second cruncher, and there Orca seems to be included from the start.
Also in Ubuntu standard it seems to be included right away, from what google said.

Re: Looking at a low end linode, boinc on ssh?

Once you have Linux up and running, you can enter this in terminal:

sudo apt-get install boinc-client boinc-manager

sudo -u boinc boinccmd --project_attach http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org XXXXX

XXXXX is where you will put in your WCG Account Key (found on the WCG website by going to Settings > My Profile > Account Key is toward the bottom of the screen)

Re: Looking at a low end linode, boinc on ssh?

Hi,
thank you so much for the information so far.
I will give both of these a try - should boinc be run out of another user account apart from the root?

You will be installing Boinc as superuser from whatever account you have created during Linux installation.

The commands I provided above are from my typical Linux Mint install. Full instructions for other distributions are here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Installing_BOINC

Re: Looking at a low end linode, boinc on ssh?

Hi,
thanks again!
This was a great help.
I have an old AMD athlon single core buried in the garage. I may see what I can do with it assuming it powers up.

Test, for some reason, I'm unable to post to this thread. It's saying I don't have permission. All I'm trying to do is add a bulleted list using appropriate BBcode.

You don't have permission to access /forums/wcg/addpostprocess on this server.

It's like some magical keyword is not permitted in my reply post, but it's NOT telling me which word it is, so I'm left guessing. Frustrating forum.
