Windows 10 ...discuss

Another Windows 10 upgrade another dead PC

I roll it back it's working a treat booting from Acronis ... again
Microsoft attack it overnight with a so called update

Please select your keyboard layout

aarrrgghh

Dear Microsoft
Life is too short to be bypassing problems that you have introduced to my number crunchers.

The last few months of upgrades have been appalling. Start Buttons not working without a rummage around in Regedit. Nvidia Drivers removed for no good reason and now the dead pc in the morning problem.

I am easily pleased all you have to do is keep my pc working like it was yesterday

Best Regards
Dave

Sorry to hear you had problems. Which update broke your computer?

Re: Windows 10 ...discuss

My PC updated from Windows 10 1703 to 1709 using the standard Windows Update procedure in October.
The problems I noticed were:
keyboard was changed from UK to US
date formats became US not UK
all tile information from the start menu have been replaced by non-sense
some programs disappeared from the start menu e.g. passwordsafe
all programs e.g. firefox, chrome, ccleaner, Iobit suite have reverted to 'first execution' i.e. they lost all information e.g. bookmarks, usernames, never ask for password.
shortcut links on the desktop pointing to personal '.BAT' files disappeared
my existing user 'cxxxxx' has had a new set of folders created as 'home folders' under name 'cxxxxx.computername' (name changed for privacy) and everything wants to default to using the new folders!
The 'start button' and search box did not always work so I had to revert to control-alt-delete to allow a restart.
The icons in the 'show hidden icons' section of the task bar became more and more fuzzy as the day progressed and were almost unrecognisable.

After struggling through until early January in the hope that a subsequent Windows update would correct the problem, I restored the C: drive from a Macrium Reflect (free version) image backup.
Windows Update did updates to 1703 and then the upgrade to 1709. This time it worked successfully.
I then had to repeat program updates I had done since October.
Most of my data was already current on my D: drive but I had to recover a few data files from the current Macrium Reflect image backup.

Get Win10 Pro and stop the auto updates/reboots.

Re: Windows 10 ...discuss

There are also some reported reboot problems at the moment due to Intel security patches.

+1

Had similar problems with Developer edition of WIn10...they f... up with nVidia drivers without OpenCL, which in turn got my computer restart while doing OpenCL WUs on SETi@home.
Wrote to them how stupid they are & disabled the auto-update of drivers...now they can't update that, but still on Developer edition update some things!

But on other instance, they can't update without me.
Sometimes I think they are like:

over there!
