Re: Signal 11 on linux machine

BOINC install was from synaptic package manager, and by default the client starts automatically, and doesn't log anything to disk. This laptop is so "small" that I don't run any x-windows task manager, just boinctui. I suppose the initial part of those startup messages is what you want to see... I'll have to see if I can capture them.

If not, would the dmesg log from startup be as useful to you?

Re: Signal 11 on linux machine

Did you check something like /var/log/boinc.log ?

Re: Signal 11 on linux machine

That was my first directory to investigate. No such log, nor in the BOINC project directory tree. Nor any other reasonable location.

This is a single core intel chip - single threaded only. And the video chips aren't supported b any GPU tasks.

By the way, resetting the project and rebooting and restarting boincclient did eventually result in receipt of MIP tasks early today. All such tasks were dispatched in the usual few seconds with Signal 11 error.

At this point I can try to get a boinc log going, but right now I see no other direction to try to sort this out.

Re: Signal 11 on linux machine

One silly(?) question - you say it's a small laptop, and have noted it's single-core; how much RAM has it got? I'm hoping 512MB or 1GB!

A typical MIP task wants over 256MB of memory to run, and I have no idea how it will perform if it has to depend on swap space... And, of course, all it needs is one failed memory allocation that isn't tested for properly, and problems will arise.

By the way, I run 32-bit MIP jobs just fine under XUbuntu 16.04 in a 32-bit Virtual Machine, but I've given it a couple of GB of RAM to work with. I have not tried a test with a memory-deprived system, so I don't know what will actually happen in such a case.

Good luck tracking down your problem - Al.

Re: Signal 11 on linux machine

One other thing comes to mind. If you could post the first 30 or 40 lines from the BOINC log from startup that might be helpful. Look under "advance" and then "event log".
Also, are you on a wired system or are you using wireless for your internet connectivity ?
Cheers

Re: Signal 11 on linux machine

I run MIP on an old Acer Aspire netbook, with 1GB RAM and an Intel Atom N270, 1.60GHz, running Tiny Core Linux.

I initially had problems with the tasks crashing (also Signal 11 IIRC) at first, and I updated Tiny Core from 4.7.7 to 5.4, which is kernel 3.0.21 to 3.8.13. Unfortunately I forget what I had traced the problem down to specifically, or how, but I think it was some problem with the glibc version on the older Tiny Core distribution?

Re: Signal 11 on linux machine

I aimed specifically for small footprint Linux. But I have never seen a discussion about BOINC compatibility with Tiny Core Linux. So I assume it works well for you.

what do you use to manage the jobs on your Acer? I usually use boinctui in an x-term or command line interface, but the command line is less convenient and efficient.

Do you get notices of security updates/fixes for the Tiny Core Linux distribution? How do you keep it up to date?

Thanks.

Re: Signal 11 on linux machine

I wouldn't really recommend Tiny Core Linux for this purpose. That wasn't my aim. I just wished to comment that I have a machine with low resources that is able to run MIP WUs, and that it had previously been getting Signal 11, and an OS update fixed it.

I started with Tiny Core 4 because there is a Boinc extension for that version of the OS. All I had to do was install Tiny Core and then go to the Apps tool to install Boinc. But it's an old OS and an old version of Boinc. I was lucky that an upgrade to Tiny Core 5 didn't break Boinc. (The current version of Tiny Core is 8.2.1, but they are working on version 9).

The version of Boinc is 7.0.28. I get messages from Boinc quite frequently that tell me that there is a newer version of Boinc. As long as that old version keeps working, it doesn't worry me, but in order to update it, I would probably have to build it myself.

I don't worry about security on that machine. It's tucked away in the basement and I rarely look at it. All it does is work on WCG and SETI@home 24/7.

I use the graphical boncmgr to manage the jobs.

Sounds right. Since July last year, they've been putting out new projects compiled for more recent versions of Linux, with no documentation of which version is required. However, older projects haven't changed, so they will still keep running fine.

(during this beta is when it first hit me)
