I was able to get boinc docker running s390x. the docker container is ubuntu 18.0.4, but the docker build is s390x architecture. when I tried to add WCG, it said 390x architecture is not supported. Otherwise, everything else (except for maybe xorg x11 complaining /var/input/mice) everything else seemed to be running smoothly. shame that IBM's own project won't support their own hardware. Yep! ![]() |

shame that IBM's own project won't support their own hardware. The problem regarding the missing mainframe support is not caused by IBM but by the scientists not developing a version of the science for the mainframe platform. At the other end, we experience exactly the same situation for the Raspberry Pi platform running Raspian not currently supported by the sciences. Cheers, Yves |

Cheers, Yves Actually (again), Raspberry Pi can be run with Android OS, which can use WCG software to be used for science. Team of WCG people is 6-8, so they don't have the man power to implement another system on small scale of Raspberry Pis'. So if you want to use your Raspberry Pi, turn it on Android OS. Or use some other BOINC project, like SETi@home. ![]() |

Today we spun up an IBM Power8 server. We installed CentOS 7 (Little Endian) and the boinc-client, which runs perfectly. We've attached the WCG project to the boinc-client, and I see the machine in my WCG account. Yet the machine doesn't receive work units. 1) Is this due to the fact that the Power8 architecture isn't supported? 2) Is there a way to get WCG up and running on a Power8 CPU archtitecture? Btw, the server is on and remains on. If anyone of the WCG team would like to do some testing for Power8, my server will accept beta work units .I think you may get a quicker answer if you redo your post as a new topic. |

Hi I am back. I am no longer at IBM. I am at CGI.
I know its an old thread, but has the move been done to a mainframe? Is the same code running for every research you do or different code depending on the recearsh? Also, in what language is it written and do you use databases? |

Welcome back Browser-Ice
----------------------------------------As to 'how to run WCG on a mainframe', I don't personally know - but I know it HAS been done in the past, as there once was a user called 'Kermit' (if I remember correctly), and his throughput/day, was the envy of everyone - far outstripping even the most keen crunchers with huge 'CPU farms' at the time. ![]() |

I do not believe Mr. Kermit ran work on a mainframe, but used the server farm at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
