The FCC Just Killed Net Neutrality. Now What?
----------------------------------------The Federal Communications Commission voted Thursday to dismantle its net neutrality regulations. But that won’t end the fight over rules that prohibit internet service providers from creating fast lanes for some content, while blocking or throttling others. https://www.wired.com/story/after-fcc-vote-ne...moves-to-courts-congress/ |

Net Neutrality is a farce and was in place only a few years...it did not fix anything and was yet another unnecessary regulation to fix something not broken.

Of course, time will tell Jake1402 - but there is a saying about closing the gate after the horse has bolted....I just hope that this isn't the case here. ![]() |

Net Neutrality is a farce and was in place only a few years...it did not fix anything and was yet another unnecessary regulation to fix something not broken. On Friday, everything will be the same as it was on Wednesday… and yet these liberals respond as if FCC Chairman Ajit Pai just dropped a nuclear bomb on the Internet. It’s a ridiculous response. It also ignores the fact that the FCC and the federal government will CONTINUE to regulate the internet, as they have been for the last 30 years. The FCC will require ISPs to be transparent about their services, meaning that bandwidth throttling or other network management practices, which have sometimes been opaque to consumers, would have to be clearly labeled. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), meanwhile, would be empowered to regulate anti-competitive or anti-consumer behavior, stepping in when internet companies make promises to provide a service that they do not keep. Transparency is meaningless when the various ISPs in effect form a cabal with the power to dictate how access is purchased with no fear of competition. The existing ISPs are all - every one of them - providers of cable television. In some cases they also own the television networks as well.
Maybe you remember a little project called Google Fiber? Google pivoted away from it and began concentrating on wireless access. While they were trying to lay cable for their wired service they kept getting hit with lawsuits and other various machinations brought by existing ISPs geared to prevent them from laying cable and getting the business off the ground. Every city they tried to go into was a legislative fight with existing carriers working to make sure municipalities denied them permits to dig. That's not a competitive free-market. |

Is this the end of uninhibited distributed computing? https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-switc...ping-act-of-deregulation/ Federal regulators are expected to vote Thursday morning to allow Internet providers to speed up service for some apps and websites — and block or slow down others — in a decision repealing landmark, Obama-era regulations for broadband companies such as AT&T and Verizon. Hopefully, EU won't follow that lead! ![]() |
