I'm wondering if people with similar hardware are running all threads at max with no heat or throttling issues. My CPU has 4 cores, 8 threads and runs at 4GHz (up to 4.2 max turbo) Running Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility (on Windows 10 Pro) I discovered my CPU was being throttled down often when running boinc wcg projects
. So I cut down cpu usage % to 30% to cut the throttling after experimenting with different percentages. I'm using a cooler master 212 evo with the i7-6700k and I'm not overclocking. I blew a lot of dust out of the heat sink area but that didn't help. The system is stable and idles at about 35C but when the boinc tasks get going the temperature oscillates bumping up against over 90C. Anyone have similar experiences or thoughts regarding this? |

You're much better off to use the power management control of to OS to lower the GHZ, than using the very poorly implemented throttle of BOINC (works as on-off in whole seconds at 30 percent as 7 second pause, 3 second running).
So happens, yesterday I upped the fixed % of Maximum Processor State from 85 (2.8ghz) to 88 (3.0Ghz), to get an on-air temp of 59C (just the 200Mhz raised temps 3C). That 200Mhz raised the TDP per CoreTemp from 39W to 43W. The next 200Mhz raises the temp 3C, but increases wattage by 5W, |

If you are running into heat issues running at 100% I would suggest looking at a couple of other items such as a thermal paste problem between the cpu and the heat sink or possibly the inadequate flow of air over the heat sink or through the case.

If you are running into heat issues running at 100% I would suggest looking at a couple of other items such as a thermal paste problem between the cpu and the heat sink or possibly the inadequate flow of air over the heat sink or through the case. Cheers This is good advice. First thing I would look at if I were you @Fuddrux is the thermal paste. Not sure how long you have had this machine up and running, but over time the paste may dry out and need replacement. I would opt for some higher end stuff, which can be found pretty easily on amazon, etc. When I apply thermal paste, I put a small dab in the center of the chip, and use an old credit card or business card to spread it out. Works great to give a nice even coat. Edit: more is not better. Another thing to check, and I have almost done this myself, is make sure the plastic piece at the bottom of the cpu cooler was removed. I have seen people saying their system is overheating, and it turns out they didn't remove the plastic protection piece where the base of the cooler meets the cpu. Do you have good airflow through the case? A 212 evo should be sufficient to cool that cpu, but if all it is doing is blowing hot air through the heat spreader, it will be less efficient. I try to make my systems with as much of a push/pull design as possible. Cool air coming in from front, cpu cooler set to blow the air toward the back, and the rear case fan pulls it right out the back. The last thing I can think to check is make sure the fan on the 212 is still spinning freely. If it is older, (or even brand new) the bearings could be going bad and it is not spinning at the rpms that it should be. The BIOS should show you the rpms. if it is the fan, they are fairly easy to find. I like the noctua fans, they are great quality, but not the prettiest in the world. Function over form for me :) [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Nov 30, 2017 12:56:40 PM] |

Thanks to all for the suggestions! The machine is about 2 years old and I will try reapplication of the thermal paste and make sure the cooling unit is well seated as well as other things mentioned. I turned the fan up to higher settings in the bios but no joy there.
@SekeRob I tried the 88% setting you are using which brought the max core frequency down to 3.49GHz and that immediately put an end to high temps and throttling and seems to be a much better solution than using boinc manager settings. Great suggestion thanks! |

Seriously, as has been suggested i'd check your thermal paste or cooler, I run 2 6700k systems and they just have stock intel coolers and sit happily at 100% all day long and have done for nearly a year. The 212 evo is a good cooler and there no way you should be seeing throttling with that.
Hope you get sorted. |
