Server status & remaining WUs

Hi all,

I recently joined WCG project (been in other for long already) but I feel surprised there is no eays way to track project status. How can we see how many Wus are to be processed, how many are remaining...etc?

Thx for your feedback.
Javi

I don't know, but I know that a lot of smart crunchers do
- and that they will come and tell you all you want to know.
In the meantime: Welcome to WCG and to the Forums, javif

Re: Server status & remaining WUs

Hola javif,

This is the official way to track the status of a project: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/research/viewAllProjects.do

Some WCG forum members work on and publish their own estimates.
There is no page that shows how many work units are left, in progress, etc.

Re: Server status & remaining WUs

The number of WU to process for each project is a "moving target".
In particular for long projects, the number and the size of the WU to process can evolve significantly.
However the project overview page is not updated very accurately. Sometime the figures do not change for weeks, even if a lot of work has been performed in the mean time.
Cheers,
Yves

Re: Server status & remaining WUs

Therefore, there is no "clue" how is each project going...
I must admit is not something very "user friendly", people (like me) like seeing the "progress" and knowing what are are doing and where are we going to

Some project have their own web pages, but still don't know how accurate they are?

Re: Server status & remaining WUs

KLIK is maintaining a date to completion grid. You can find it at https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,39475_offset,0

If you surf the forums you find a bunch of other participants that do something similar and/or with more graphs etc.

My understanding is that the official page is dependent on when and what the research projects report, and some projects don't/can't report very often.

Thx for the reply.

Unfortunately I must admit is quite unclear still.

I can't understand why project team does not send some updates, somehow we are blinding crunching.

I think I will move to Einstein@home all my CPUs.

Javi

Re: Server status & remaining WUs

Hi javif,
it is clear that smooth communication and public relation do not represent the main quality of researchers.
I can understand your frustration but I can imagine the complain of some other people if the progress bar would jump ahead and back because of the extension/limitation of the project scope based on the earned results.
Since I have some researchers in my Family and friend circle, I know that they have always clear plans and objectives, but that those can (should) change rapidly.
WCG is supporting initial (basic) research works. Per definition, we should accept that, in some ways, we are contributing "blind" since the journey can be very long between the initial work and the practical results.
I do respect every grid project, but my dedication to WCG is, at first, because we enable some investigations that would not be possible otherwise.
Enjoy,
Yves
