Re: Weekend Puzzles

This is another math puzzle with six figures to reach a target number.
The six figures are 1, 4, 5, 8, 9, 50.
The target number is 982.

Should be an easy one. Good luck!

Adri
PS The answer for yesterday's puzzle will be posted later on, since the weekend isn't over yet (in UTC).
PPS To overcome the Forbidden problem I had to mark the word 'target'.

Re: Weekend Puzzles

Done -- found a very simple answer and one that's a bit more exotic...

Cheers - Al.

P.S. I don't get why it didn't like tárget (note the diacritic) -- I'll post this then see if I can edit it back to the unaccented version...
P.P.S. First posting done, and when I then removed the diacritic I could Preview it! It is also quite happy with the post as you see it here, so I'm at a loss to explain this :-(

Re: Weekend Puzzles

A target something.
The target anything.

The text above doesn't want to be posted, it's running into the Forbidden problem.
Although… can we circumvent the problem again? Yes.
It gets posted once I put a mark around the space inbetween 'target' and the following word.

Re: Weekend Puzzles

Adri -- I feel your pain, as I had just spent 25 minutes or so constructing a query to Dylan in the "Project Status" thread and it got Forbidden as soon as I hit Preview (and nothing I could do to shorten it helped...

I rather suspect that it was something to do with the proxy or some other aspect of the infrastructure rather than any particular word(s) I used, because when I used another system to post a shorter version of my failed post Preview let it through and I eventually got the query out!

As for using target in a sentence, it doesn't fail for me (says he, testing it again here, and yes, that passed...). I then added another sentence and it said Forbidden so I culled that sentence and replaced it with this one. That previewed o.k.

Cheers - Al.

P.S, The offending sentence was "That said, just because we're paranoid it doesn't mean they aren't out to get us...", and now it'll preview and [presumably] post! So I'm leaning towards a proxy or addpost access issue rather than a content issue...

[Edited to modify the P.S. to reflect successful post and add the "proxy or addpost" remark.]

Re: Weekend Puzzles

The answer to the puzzle that was posted in post 706759: XN

Explanation:
The capital letters represent the coordinates of the "o"-marked cell in each one of the six diagrams. The top cells are denoted by an X, the bottom cells by a Y. The cells on the left are denoted by an N, cells on the right by an M. The cells in the middle lanes (horizontally as well as vertically) are denoted by an L.

Re: Weekend Puzzles

Three contestants reported they solved the puzzle with six numbers and a target number. (The six numbers were 1, 4, 5, 8, 9, and 50, and the target number was 982.)

My solution was as follows:
50 × 5 × 4 - 9 - 8 - 1 = 982.
Did anyone have any other answer? I've seen Al claiming to have an exotic one. wink

Re: Weekend Puzzles

Adri,

As you could do it with only four numbers [4^5 + 8 - 50] and 4 is also 9-4-1...

(9 - 4 - 1)^5 + 8 - 50

or, of course, (9-5)^(1+4) + 8 - 50 smile

Cheers - Al.

Re: Weekend Puzzles

(4*5*50)-1-8-9
Pretty much the same as Adri's answer. I just use the parentheses to make it look cleaner, but they are not really necessary.
