Recently got & installed a new router (Linksys AC5400 MU-MIMO GIGABIT ROUTER). Have Comcast Blast as ISP (up to 200 Mbps download). Since installing the new router, BOINC seems to cause problems with my home network. Easiest example is problems using Netflix; when I run a speed test, I get download speed anywhere from 60 Mbps to 240 Mbps. However, when BOINC makes a connection, those speeds drop way down.
I've been running BOINC on: - my LG G3 phone (with Android 6.0) - a desktop running Widnows 10 with a wired connection to my router, and - a desktop running Windows 7, also with a wired connection to my router.. I removed BOINC from the Windows 10 machine (via Windows Uninstall process), and did not power-up the Windows 7 machine for a few weeks. For those few weeks Netflix worked fine. (I'm using Netflix from a TV that is also connected to the home network via a wired connection). I recently powered-up the windows 7 machine, and the problems surfaced again. I tried to uninstall BOINC from the Windows 7 machine via Control Panel and BOINC is not included in the list of programs, but the list of programs does include a program named "World Community Grid". When I try to uninstall that from Control Panel/Programs & Features/Uninstall, I'm asked if I'm sure I want to proceed. When I select "Yes", the following message is returned: "Error opening installation log file. Verify that the specified log file location exists and is writable." I don't know how to proceed with the uninstall, yet I strongly suspect that BOINC and/or World Community Grid are causing problems with my home network. What must I do to proceed with the uninstall? |

BOINC uses localhost IP 127.0.0.1/port 31416 on each machine to connect pieces of BOINC inside each machine, the NIC traffic never leaves the machine. Things go bonkers if using a LAN IP instead for instance 192.168.0.15, then all the client-science app traffice starts running thru the router. At any rate, smells like you've got IP conflicts and possibly a somewhat tightly set firewall inside that router that's choking LAN traffic. And then W10 is aggressively set to a use the LAN for it's own distribution purposes.
----------------------------------------To uninstall WCG's version of BOINC you first need to fetch a copy of that version and run it to repair, then uninstall again. Same for the regular BOINC version, you need that version copy as else you cannot uninstall properly. If it's borked, a registry cleaner is needed such as MS's own Installer CleanUp (Tread with caution) Root cause of uninstaller issues: Windows is supposed to keep a copy of all the installer .msi files... they get deleted, the question being "Who did that?" Recently got & installed a new router (Linksys AC5400 MU-MIMO GIGABIT ROUTER). Going by those pieces of your description, I rather suspect that you have a basic problem in your network configuration since putting in the new router, like a duplicated IP address between your TV and one of your hosts.... For those few weeks Netflix worked fine. (I'm using Netflix from a TV that is also connected to the home network via a wired connection). ... I don't know how to proceed with the uninstall, yet I strongly suspect that BOINC and/or World Community Grid are causing problems with my home network. WCG/BOINC do not have such an impact on the network as you are describe. They are just clients that use the network at times, but they are not actively interfering with the operation as per your description... Ralf |
