Just to make everyone aware, I know enough about computers to be dangerous. I was born in 1950 BC (before computers. Had to replace a motherboard, used same cpu chip on the new and different motherboard, same memory, went from corsair H55 liquid cooling to H60. I have been running wcg on maximum work unit output for a long time on the previous motherboard, used same settings and downloaded wcg installed as per usual and the cpu chip temp began spiking, last warning temp I saw was 75C before it shut down. I have set it all back up with my usual programs and added a mirrored drive for a little extra protection until I can get things figured out. Don't dare run wcg yet. I have set my device settings back to standard. My question is should the standard settings be ok to keep computing or do I need to customize the settings more. I hope I have not gone TMI on you. But please don't tell me to download some cooling software. Just give me some ideas to look at. I have been doing wcg computing for a long time, I go into withdrawal when I'm not doping some wcg work, really!
3 Reasons why I add my computer to WCG: 1. Cause I can 2. Cause I want to 3. (most important) Cause I get to. How wonderful to add my computing time to something larger than me, many different people, doing something really good. I know you and I make a difference, I will work with you as you work with me and what we can accomplish together, has no limit. |

Two things come immediately to mind:
----------------------------------------1: Inadequate contact between the chip and the cooler. Might be too little thermal grease or the cooler is not correctly seated against the chip. 2: Inadequate air flow to and from you liquid cooler or for some reason the radiator on the liquid cooler is partially blocked allowing inadequate passage of the cooling fluid. Good luck. Cheers

I couldn't believe in temperature spikes when using watercooling. I'm with Sgt. Joe something is weird with your installation.

3) not accidentally activated the % of CPU time function in BOINC? Then you'll see a fairly hacksaw like temp up and down, with cooling in reactive mode, on air only, you'll here fans whine up, revving down. Task Manager performance view would reveal/confirm the load changing in staccato.

What CPU do you have? In case of Ryzen X-series, these report internal temperatures 20 higher than really measured (the offset might also be different if using Sense MI Skew setting).
----------------------------------------Was the 75C the internal or external (socket) temperature? ![]() |

Both were evaluated. I thoroughly and completely recleaned my liquid cooling and cpu interface and reinstalled using the same thermal paste that has been used on previous motherboard. The liquid cooler has push pull fans without restricted airflow. please, replies speak to the issue of temp spike only when WCG runs. All the other "stuff" I have installed do not cause sudden overheating. Question: will running BOINC WCG on standard settings cause it to run cooler and not cause over heating? Serious withdrawal setting in, I haven't returned a result in too many days. I may have seen a desktop alert window to that effect. Seriously I miss participating in the computing grid with all of you. My eight cores stand ready.
Thanks for the reply sgt joe I hope you really are a sergeant! Master Sergeant Dave Root US Army Retired (21 years, 4 months and 18 days of active duty, including a 364 days in sunny southeast Asia.) Grumpy Grandfather - Priceless |

Grumpy Grandfather - Priceless Closed corsair liquid cooling system, no bleeding necessary or possible. You must believe. My eyes have seen. max output wcg settings vs standard settings, settings difference? Ran max output with same cooling, chip, memory, hd on previous MB that was lost due to sudden death (had funny electronic burning smell at time of death), researching if it's still on warranty. Autopsy results not yet available. my CPU is AMD FX 9590 eight cores, new MB is ASUS M5A97 rev 2.0, 32GB Kingston DDR3 ram. Seat-belt not included. I appreciate all the ideas and thoughts. Thanks everyone else! |

Can you cross reference the CPU thermal wattage with Corsair liquid cooling design?!
----------------------------------------As AMD FX 9590 would have to have around 220W TDP...see here: http://cpuboss.com/cpu/AMD-FX-9590 So the Corsair liquid cooling, which are you using? |
