The Clean Energy Project - project update, March 2017

Hello all,

Thanks to everyone who supported the Clean Energy Project. After two phases, the research team is working on publishing their findings and deciding on the future direction of their work with World Community Grid. Read about it in this update.

We appreciate your support!

So, by the sounds of it, I'm going to be forever 141 days short of my Sapphire target.
CEP2 = 1:224:04:51:18

Re: The Clean Energy Project - project update, March 2017

Don't give up on this project yet. Please note the possibility of more work in the future as noted in the last three paragraphs of the update.
Future Work with World Community Grid
We have not been able to submit work units for volunteer calculation because we had been working to expand the number of molecules we will test by using a low-cost computational method to evaluate the properties of potential photovoltaic materials. With our efficient calibration scheme, this would allow us to screen 10-100 times as many candidates in the same amount of time. If this process can be fully optimized, we could begin generating these work units for volunteers. Benjamin Sanchez-Lengeling has pushed this aspect of the project forward; keep an eye on this rising star!

However, it is also possible that we may go in a different direction altogether. Another idea we are considering is to use these efficient computational methods to catalog the properties of molecules that benefit humanity and have applications beyond clean energy. Molecular Space is vast and full of useful molecules for the world.

We appreciate everyone’s patience while we take stock of the resources and personnel available in our lab, and make decisions about the best scientific use of the generous donations of computing time provided by World Community Grid volunteers.

Cheers

Glad to have been a part of the project, and hope to contribute more if future research units are produced!

Well, scene as well WCG have given up on the CEP2 already - i..e, moved everything into a 'Complete' status, if (and it's a BIG IF), more work comes in the future, the likelihood is that it'd be a phase3 - i.e., a different badge (and thus, encouraging us 'mugs' to crunch like billi-o, producing results for the project scientists who don't interact or keep us in the loop as to how things are going with the reasearch. For instance, if the CEP2 project scientists had kept up their initial, and dare I say it, pretty good communication in the beginning, right through to the latter stages, we'd have known that the likelihood of the project coming to such a grinding halt was increasing as time went on. But no, it was a stony silence, right up to the project ending - and they didn't even have the guts to come on here and thank/interact with us (it was left to the WCG staff to do that).

While I didn't join this due to requirements and only get 5 days and 20 hours when other research are run out of jobs, I'm glad that another research came to fruition and now off the main research page.

More cool research!

Hopefully the researchers will get their work published. All the work is for naught if no one knows about it. applause

Glad I was able to throw in 2+ years of CPU time. It was a difficult project to crunch for.

Cheers coffee

Tempus fugit. Winds of change continue to blow and we bend in the wind.

I hope there are more water and energy projects in those winds.
