Morgan, be sure you can see your My Grid page prior to trying to make the change. I want to say that there's a different message you get when the daily updating is happening and a lot of the website function is disabled. That sounds a lot more like the message I would get on rare occasions when I was trying to create team challenges. Simply immediately trying again would work. If you try to make the change, get the error, immediately try the change again and still get the error, I'd suggest emailing support@worldcommunitygrid.org about the problem. Give them plenty of details - OS version/level, browser type and version, BOINC version (probably irrelevant but TMI is better than too little) and the UTC time when you tried to make the change (in case they can look back in sort sort of log). I presume you are going to the My Profile page, replacing your current username with the new username you want and clicking on Save. Include that fact as well. FWIW, I used that via Chrome on a Wintel box to change the username for a test id I have and it worked fine.
