Re: Micro PC Crunshing

Oh, that sounds promising. Does the 1GB of RAM rely suffice...even for Linux?
What Points per day figures are you getting from it?

This is a first generation Stick with a 4 core Atom cpu running at 1.33 GHz.
Not blazingly fast but is running Zeka wus in about 4 to 4.5 hours. and Ebola in about 2 to 3.5 hours. Not too bad for a $45USD stick. I will have better better numbers to share in a couple of days

Thanks, that is actually not that bad considering the cost and what CPU it has.
Looking forward to the numbers! :)

Here are the returns for the last 3 full days. There are still 7 WUs in PVal.

10/27/2016-- 0:004:02:12:31-- 9,701-- 28
10/26/2016-- 0:003:05:43:36-- 8,325-- 22
10/25/2016-- 0:002:08:33:49-- 6,078-- 15

The 8GB disk space is adequate to run 4 WUs at a time. Don't run the software update that it asks for! shock This update is large and takes up enough disk space to reduce WCG to only 2 WUs. crying (I am running Zeka and Ebola on this mini). I did a software reset and it is now back to running 4 WUs again. biggrin

Thanks for the numbers, that's not too bad.
I shall explore this further. Maybe a Meegopad T07 with 4GB RAM from Aliexpress on the 11/11 shopping festival on Friday. :)

Re: Micro PC Crunshing

Today I did some number comparisons between 3 of my 1st generation intel compute sticks running Ubuntu 14.04 and my Apple IMac running OS X el Capitan.
All computers are running a mix of Zeka and Ebola WUs. I did an average of points processed over the period of 7 days (Nov 13 - 19).

The IMac averaged 27270 points per day
The 3 Intel Sticks added together averaged 27714 points per day.

The Intel Sticks can be had for 40USD each on Ebay. I run all computers 24/7 so we will see if they were a good investment in the long run.

Re: Micro PC Crunshing

I just added my first Intel Compute Stick w/Linux. It only has 1GB memory and 8GB storage, but I only plan to use it for WCG. So far it is running smoothly and is only warm to the touch.

I am really frustrated with Intel marketing strategy for the compute stick.
Here - Continental Europe - the Linux/Ubuntu version with only 1 GB RAM and 8 GB flash disk is significantly more expensive than the Windows 10 version with 4 GB RAM and 32 GB flash disk.
Consequently, I assume that M$ pays Intel for distributing Win 10 version on expensive hardware, otherwise I cannot understand how it is more expensive to distribute an Operating System without license costs on cheaper hardware than a non-for-free OS on more expensive hardware.
If I could be sure to be able to replace Win 10 with Linux on the more powerful compute stick, I would try it but since I am not sure to succeed I go away from this product.
It is a pity.
Cheers,
Yves

Re: Micro PC Crunshing

Yves, installing Ubuntu on that cheaper Compute Stick (4 GB RAM, 32 GB SSD) seems possible: Simplest way to load Ubuntu on Intel Compute Stick.

Re: Micro PC Crunshing

Hi Adri,
I thank you for the link. I will maybe try it for test purpose. The reason to be careful is because of serious difficulties I experienced by replacing Win 8 or 10 with Ubuntu resp. Linux Mint on some laptops, where UEFI made the process really difficult or in one case impossible (I had to replace the original HDD with a new one).
Cheers,
Yves

PS: The rest of my comment regarding Intel's marketing strategy remains valid.

Re: Micro PC Crunshing

That Intel marketing strategy you detail makes absolutely no sense. Why on earth would Intel do that ? Baffles me.
Cheers

Re: Micro PC Crunching

It is rumoured that there will be new models with Apollo Lake chips in 2017 and they will also be cheaper and faster: https://www.nextpowerup.com/news/31857/intel-...-lake-cpu-coming-in-2017/
