Re: Optimizing my future dedicated cruncher build

Don't forget a good UPS. Nothing sucks more than coming home to a dead computer due to power failure. Screws with the OS when it just shuts off. I have one on each computer and set to shut down when the battery gets under 25%.

Re: Optimizing my future dedicated cruncher build

Hey, I read your specs, nice computer system. but you spent way too much for a dedicated number cruncher system especially with such a low clock speed.

You would be better off going for several lower core count machines. I myself have 2 dedicated cruncher systems myself. My specs are
2x intel 6800k @ 3.4GHz (overclocked to 4.2GHz) (6 core/12threads)
2x x-99-A motherboards
2x DDR4 16Gb 2133Mhz
2x 750w Thermake gold powersupply
2x Dukase cases
2x Hyper 612 v2 air coolers
2x 1Gb WD Black hard drive
and have 2 cheap video cards to allow post
and VNC software to remote into them.

Each system cost about $1,500

How much electricity do you have to pay for? A dual CPU system may use significantly less than two devices.

Re: Optimizing my future dedicated cruncher build

As others have mentioned before me, All-In-One closed-loop water coolers won't last. I ran Corsair's H100 and then when that failed I got a replacement and it failed too and then they replaced it with an H100i and I sold it new-in-box. It was only a matter of months before those coolers started to deteriorate. What I noticed first was that the temperatures went up by 10 degrees and then strange noise form the water pump probably.

Regarding dust...perhaps you could have some use of the new "Dust-free fans" (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835214069 there are other variations on size etc available)

Basically they can spin in both directions...which is supposed to keep them from having that fine dust gathering on the fins. I don't know if they only do that backward-spinning thing at boot-time, but perhaps it is a good idea to reboot the PC once in a while anyway?

Oh well, just a couple of thoughts.

Re: Optimizing my future dedicated cruncher build

Bearcat - I have never thought about getting a UPS, although I have to agree that sudden shutdown can screw with the OS.

geoff - Actually, my system cost less than your 2 systems as I went with ES Xeons and second hand ram. Everything else, I got brand new.
I haven't measured the power draw yet but will do when I get some more time to tinker with it. Although it has a low clock speed, I think the numbers are pretty good.

Flodisar - I am sorry to hear that. And now that it has been pointed out by a few people, do you think it is worth buying say a 212 EVO to just keep in the house as backup?

At home, both of my crunching rigs are AIO cooled. One for 20months, one for 1 month without issues. The build that my dad runs has run for 14months without issues.

Re: Optimizing my future dedicated cruncher build

Those Enermax D.F.Pressure UCDFP12P Dust Free 120mm Case Fans are interesting, though I have a hard time in the once a month boot and 10 second reverse spin will clean much, particular the fan edges. Seemingly you can set these to max (3 speed modes), and then let the system temp control rev them based on system temps. Looked for the occasion and appear to have 2 80mm in the 4770K case, and applied some pressurized air, which promptly dropped CPU temps from 73 to 56C (stable after several hours)... time to rev-up the CPU again to stock ;O)

vcd683s. What did you end up paying for your chips? In Canada I can find the V3's for $4,800 each

Re: Optimizing my future dedicated cruncher build

A question for those who know. I just removed the video card from the build and thus using the onboard graphics which are quite low powered, but adequate for a dedicated linux-based cruncher.

I currently have the rig sitting in the corner of my spare room, running Linux mint 18-cinnamon. It communicates using the aforementioned wifi card and I login using Team viewer when I need to.

Would there be any tweaks to make that would improve things? At the moment, I am quite satisfied with things, but I am sure there are improvements!

Re: Optimizing my future dedicated cruncher build

Not having a video card will not affect your WCG Boinc jobs. Currently there are no projects that use a GPU for the work. WCG only uses CPU. Maybe in the future there will be one which I would like because I also have a Mint machine with a GeForce card in it.
