Re: OpenZika: Linux Ubuntu versus Windows 10

Thanks Jim for your feedback. Would I be correct in saying it's runs quicker on the Linux?

You are referring to Zika? Yes, it is much faster on Linux, as with all the VINA projects. I don't bother running them on my Windows machine. But the MCM, MIP and FAH2 do quite well on Windows. If there are others that do as well on Windows, I have not found them yet.

Jim you are absolutely right I was talking about Zika. Currently on Windows they are running in the low 2 hour range

They take about an hour and 5 minutes on my Ryzen 1700 and 2700 machines running Ubuntu 18.04. I have found that the Ryzens are usually about the same per core (more or less) as my Haswell i7-4790, if that is any help for comparison.

Re: OpenZika: Linux Ubuntu versus Windows 10

Thanks Jim for the time comparison. I just completed ZIKA_ 000412087_ x5k6k_ ZIKV_ NS1_ MD_ model_ 5_ s1_ 1023_ 0-- in .49 of an hour on my I 7 5960 X job consisted of 7 tasks. Are you able to give me an idea of how long it takes to do a zika task on your Windows machine or is it about the same as my machine? You're Ryzen is the same base clock as mine in your post is 200 MHz more than mine. Mine is one the stock speed

Re: OpenZika: Linux Ubuntu versus Windows 10

My times running Zika with various CPUs:

Win 10 with 4670K at 4.2GHz = 0.90 Hrs
Ubuntu 18.04 with Xeon at 2.8GHz = 1.10 Hrs
Win 10 with R5 1600 at 3.4 GHz 1.20 Hrs
Ubuntu 18.04 with X7900 at 2.8GHz = 1.10 Hrs

.90 hours per task is a great run time for windows I would only get if it was a quick running batch. I do like it when I see faster running tasks

I don't think you will get that if the cores are fully loaded. It looks like you probably have left some cores free.
With virtual cores (i.e., hyper-threading), that means the remaining cores will go faster.

The 4670K doesn't have hyper threading, i.e. 4 cores/4 threads.

OK, that explains it, more or less. But then it is not exactly an apples-to-apples comparison, since your R5 1600 does have HT. I don't know about the Xeon.

I think on identical machines the results would favor Linux quite clearly for any VINA project (that included Eboba, Leishmaniasis, etc.). Thanks for the input.
