Made good progress today but still had time for some frustrations. The two quad-core hyper-threaded machines are running, BOINCTasks sees them and they are back up to date on Windows Update. I'm liking WIN 10 the more I deal with it, at least in comparison with previous levels of Windows. That got emphasized working on the Pentium running Vista. I could get BOINC running on it but BOINCTasks couldn't see it. When I tried updating the auth and config files for that, Windows wouldn't let me save the files. Finally remembered from MANY years ago that UAC on Vista was a royal pain (trying to be polite) and the first thing I did when I got my quad a good decade ago was disable UAC. That, and some muddling with Windows Firewall got that working. Of course, also remembering that the ProgramData directory is hidden by default helped a bit too. That machine is still working on getting current on Windows Updates. The last machine (the HP) won't boot up - asks for the system disk - so I'm setting that one aside for a while (think it's single core like the Pentium anyway). With the growing need to wireless access these days, looking at taking most all of my machine back to ethernet but need to pick up an ethernet switch first to add more ports. Cascading routers works fine for wireless but BOICTasks gets stupid trying to access machines on the cascaded router. As I understand, with the ethernet switch, I can have everything on the main router via ethernet and save wireless for phones, tablets and my daughter's laptop. With the cascaded routers, I can spread the wireless load across them if need be. Still need to get the printer moved and connected thru the KVM. That will let me use it off any machine (once they all have the driver) which will be nice. Also will have to look at standardizing the AV/etc. as old machines have been running Norton and these new ones use the Windows stuff. May be a good time to check out that PCMatic outfit. Think that's the same folks that kept running the ads for the "speed up your PC" app under a different name every few months. Apparently they've tried to go legit and, for 50 bucks for 5 PCs, their AV goes the whitelist route - you can't get to something unless it's in the whitelist vs the usual AV approach of blacklisting after the fact. Easy updating of the whitelist on the fly would seem a must. It's conceptually appealing but could still be crap. We'll see. That would have things up and running but then the real fun can begin - cleaning them up, getting things organized and moving all of them to WIN10. Linux machines are so low profile though. Set them up, get them running and forget about them. Haven't even rebooted them since last year.

Man, getting HSTB work is worse than having to reach around from behind a skunk and pulling a tooth! in the past, even the worst cases gave you enough work to keep a machine busy if it ran a project exclusively. I know the work has been limited since it started but just HOW limited is eye-opening!
