Memory requirements

Here it says that this project needs 250MB of RAM. Either that is incorrect or the server has the incorrect memory requirements as the server reports that it requires 384MB of memory. So which is it; 250MB or 384MB?

Re: Memory requirements

In practice it is probably substantially less than 250 MB. My Win 8.1 32 bit reports 33 and 50 MB for the 2 tasks it is running. I am also running 4 tasks efficiently on a 1 GB Android tablet.

Re: Memory requirements

Both of my Windows 10 tablets reports between 30 to 50MB of RAM being used. The tablet also has 1GB of RAM and it is getting task and crunching them without any issues

Re: Memory requirements

This thread is for the WCG techs as you cannot fix the disparity between what the requirements page states and what the server has set as the requirements.

Given that the most I've seen under Linux is ~65MB, why does it matter when the two exaggerated "requirements" are different? Do you have a machine with 256MB RAM that refuses to run these jobs?

Re: Memory requirements

Minima as tested in the client opposed to what's on the MSR page is off for several sciences. E.g. for long, free disk on CEP2 has to be at download point 2.560MB, but the MSR page says 2.048MB. If I look at the beta running task it says:

<rsc_disk_bound>2684354560.000000</rsc_disk_bound>

Got 5 running, so would need at least 13GB, but since the client only tests for the single task during fetch test, a host can still run into issues if the sum of the jobs goes over. [384 strikes me as a safety net for larger molecules or multiple jobs concurrent ascertaining... single/dual core will hardly be around. TBC]

Used to maintain a sheet with all the ~real~ numbers and many more parameters, versioning etc at http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q210/Sekerob/WCGProjectRequirements.png, but since WUProp does a good job tracking in an automated way what the various values are [think last 14 days], no need to double up. BOINCTasks also states various memory/VM max usages and logs them [think this goes as feedback to the project with the result reporting].

And to close with a quote nanoprobe's frequently uses as ending "I'm done, I'm out of here" (This thread ;P)

Re: Memory requirements

Ian, if you really need to address this urgently, please go ahead and contact the WCG as ErikaT stated above, or as others mentioned, if you don't want to crunch this project because of your concern with memory usage, then feel free to crunch on other projects. As vcd683s said, we are here as a community to help and answer each other questions and give opinions on the subject.

Re: Memory requirements

Hello all,

We have fixed the value on the server to equal 250MB. This change will be effective for all new work units created. If you get a work unit that was created before the change or a resend, you may still see the old value.

We greatly appreciate our volunteers alerting us of discrepancies, such as this, so we can address them.

However, this thread has veered off topic and many posts directly violate forum rules. I am removing each post that is in violation. If it continues, I will lock the thread.

Please keep it civil...

Thank you,
ErikaT
