I just installed on a machine running Scientific Linux 6.7. I followed the instructions at https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/join.action#os-linux-fedora and they appeared to work up until "8. When BOINC Manager opens, select World Community Grid from the list of BOINC projects". Instead it says "Unable to connect to the core client".
I can't find any log anywhere or output in the terminal where I started boincmgr. My searches haven't returned any useful help. I did find one old thread that suggested copying /var/lib/boinc/gui_rpc_auth.cfg to my home directory, which I did with no effect. So I'd appreciate any help as to how to get started. |

Never mind. I found the answer myself whilst waiting for the post to be moderated.
After adding my user to the boinc group, it's essential to start a new shell before starting boincmgr. Incomplete docs, not very helpful error messages and lack of logging are my favourites. :( |

The policy is to give the DIY department a chance to kick in or do a direct connect through Contact US, if not in a rush. :O)
For sure, I've never had to add a user account by hand myself, not on Windows, not on Linux Ubuntu. |

A somewhat better installation guide can be found at http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Installing_BOINC_on_Fedora. They speak of Fedora 17 when Fedora 24 is nearing at this moment, so it's a wee bit outdated ...
---------------------------------------- It suggests that you add your username to the group boinc if you want to edit some administrative boinc files easily from your regular user account. That should not be necessary. Neither is it necessary to 'chmod g+rw' anything in /var/lib/boinc, nor is it necessary to link gui_rpc_auth.cfg to your home directory if you install BOINC from the repositories on a more recent Fedora OS. When everything is running fine, you should see this (mind columns UID and CMD) after issuing the following command: $ ps -fu boinc [Edit 1 times, last edit by adriverhoef at May 21, 2016 10:44:28 AM] |
