IBM Macromolecule

I wonder how this project relates to the macromolecule project that recently appeared in the news.

Re: IMB Macromolecule

This seems a bit like the approach of using large polysaccharide molecules such as dextran sulphate against HIV. That doesn't work in vivo for HIV.
Run "dextran sulfate for hiv" past your search engine.

Adding "IMB" (in thread title) to "IBM" and "IBN" (Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology in Singapore) makes three similar acronyms for the host and/or sponsoring institution(s) of the research reported in this article.
Is the real International Business Machines actually involved?

Re: IBM Macromolecule

The IBM article about this is here: https://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/49706.wss

The research paper is here but requires membership or a fee: http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acs.macromol.6b00091

I have not read the paper, so I may not be telling the true story here. If this works well and can be used internally in the body, it could be a great thing. Putting large molecules in the body can be problematic. They talk about using it externally like a disinfectant soap for now. There is probably more work to be done before this is perfected and approved as a treatment, but it looks like an interesting approach. The OpenZika project is looking for a small molecule which can disable some protein critical for the ZIka virus. The hope is that the researchers will find an such a molecule and that it can be developed into an antiviral drug which can be used to cure an infected person.

well, if it can't go in the body...there's always a solution like "dialysis" or "plasma separation from blood" - except this would be blood purifying!
wink
