Re: New i7 8 and 10 core

QEY7's = $700

You should be more precise regarding the CPU reference. A quick look in Europe shows only quad core Xeon for an affordable price.
The starting price for 8 core Xeon is about EUR 700.-
A 12 core Xeon is to find at EUR 1'700.- and the 18 core Xeon is at EUR 4'500.-
Cheers,
Yves

Hi, Yves,

The prices you're quoting are full prices for retail units. You might try checking eBay. There are a number of people selling heavily-discounted "ES" (Engineering Sample) units of multi-core Xeons, some of which indicate that they will ship internationally. I purchased a Xeon E5-2695 V3 (14C/28T, 2.2GHz) about six months ago for around $550, and they're probably lower now that Broadwell-EP is out.

On that note, on the consumer side of things, if you have a recent Haswell-E build already, I don't see a real reason to upgrade unless you've got money burning a hole in your pocket and/or a desperate need for those two extra cores. If you have a system running an older architecture (Ivy Bridge-E, Sandy Bridge-E, etc.), the upgrade would also require a motherboard replacement as well as a new kit of RAM (Broadwell-E will likely only support DDR4 RAM, as opposed to the DDR3 used up to this point). If you're building a new system, however, it'll likely be a nice improvement over Haswell and worth the wait, especially since the 8-core CPUs will likely fall to a price point that's accessible to a lot more builders, and on the high-end, getting two extra cores for the same $1,000 is nice, too.

Happy crunching!

Kasey

10 core 2650v3-s for 175$

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Xeon-E...IAAOSwHjNV~XJy

Also, v4 12 core for 119$

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Xeon-E...3D151990443313

If you don't want to buy ES chips, retail LGA2011 chips are dirt cheap as well:

E5-2660 8 core for 50$

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Xeon-E5-2660-81...b8b8ae:g:voMAAOSw8vZXMj65

The v3 and v4 will have much better efficiency, but the E5-2660 is still a good performer.

LGA2011 and 2011v3 boards are a bit expensive, that is the downside of these CPUs.

Re: New i7 8 and 10 core

Looks like the 10 core monster will be high priced out of most folks reach. $1569.

Re: New i7 8 and 10 core

So the question becomes,
is the AMD ZEN going to cost close to intels?
Over at Anandtech the general consensus was 90% of the intel price.
I highly doubt that,
AMD always had good value.
Will it compare to some used ZEONS though, doubtful.

Re: New i7 8 and 10 core

If AMD is intent on keeping up the pace with intel (and nvidia), they need to spend a LOT of money on R&D.

They can only do this if they change the low profit margin they currently operate on.

This means server chips costing thousands of dollars. Enthusiast chips will be much the same, so don't expect a true 8 core for current FX prices.

This is what they must do if they can compete with intel in power & efficency.

If they stay behind in power, they must sell at lower prices than intel and we can say goodbye to AMD sooner than later.

Third option is we get horrible CPUs for ridiculous prices like the FX 9590, although I doubt that AMD want to repeat that fiasco anytime soon :D

Re: New i7 8 and 10 core

I expect AMD to sell the pc and server chip division. AMD is to busy with SoC chips and video cards where its making a little money. Microsoft did, at one time, consider buying AMD but backed out.

Re: New i7 8 and 10 core

Intel needs AMD to stay a viable company. AMD continually pushes Intel which prompts Intel to innovate to stay ahead. Besides, Intel does not need a full monopoly in the x86 market as that would draw a lot of government scrutiny.
Cheers
