To me personally, the most important goal of distributed computing
should be saving human lives. Outsmart Ebola Together, Map Cancer Markers and Fight Against Aids are directly dedicated to this honourable goal: Saving human lives. And, in my view, of these three, Outsmart is most urgent. Why? Aids is a disease you can protect yourself from: One partner for lifetime. Cancer can be cured in certain ways already now. On the contrary to the problems of Aids and Cancer, Ebola is absolutely lethal, no protection possible. This is why my plea is: Let's put all our power on Outsmart Ebola right now, finish this project first, and then return to cancer and Aids. What is the opinion of my fellow crunchers? Especially those who have 5 or 10 year badges (great, my friends, I wish I could do this, Best wishes and keep crunching! Yours MS too) should express their point of view. My deep respect for their contributions!! |

Supposedly a [working] vaccine has been sent off to Guinea v.v the latest outbreak. And, profelactics use if any encounter involves a survivor of Ebola is a must [and an educational matter].

Martin, although your heart is in the right place, there are people that may disagree with you. Cancer has claimed more victims/fatalities than Ebola and most certainly, most everybody has lost a loved one to cancer (therefore a more personal and pressing urgency to help fight cancer). I would suggest that you organize an Ebola challenge which could increase the number of Ebola crunchers.

There is also another aspect of targeting all the resources of WCG towards one specific project - could that project cope with the number of results being pumped their way? Then, even if they could, do they have the resources at their end to process all the data they'd be receiving in such a short period?

I think you've missed a few transmission vectors here - your partner might not tell you they're positive, you're may be a rape victim, get a bad blood transfusion or be a child born to a mother with AIDS, etc Everyone crunches for their own reasons. A challenge sounds like a good idea though :) |

Even though I do concur that Ebola is "more immanent threat" for a humanity, at it's lethal in more than 90% of cases!
----------------------------------------![]() Why? Cancer is mostly here 'cause of bad habits of people...there are so much data & research on those topics! HIV & AIDS does have some cures, but even changing partners might use condoms during intercourse! But I don't that that lab in charge of Ebola in SRI equipped for taking more than WCG gives it back! That's why I don't do CEP2 (unless it somehow comes to my computers)...there are simply more urgent threats than some 0 emission bio-solar cell! ![]() |

The team CRUNCHERS SANS FRONTIERES is voluntary to organize a week of challenge (7 days) via the BOINCstats platform dedicated to OET
----------------------------------------![]() Tell me if you are interested in one such initiative by answering my post (reply with +1, +2, +3...). Thx. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by [CSF] Thomas H.V. Dupont at Mar 21, 2016 8:39:52 AM] |

Got 1 octo crunching 24/7 on this project, but checking out the reality at https://www.crowdrise.com/CUREEBOLA , the funding is not moving at all since last looking, and seem to remember the target was 150K US, and now it showing as 175K US. Seems hard currency is at this time the bigger problem and feeder priority [Low], an indicator there are bottlenecks which wont improve if we start massively increasing the output.

Looking at the crowdrise link, does that mean that they can't use the crunched Ebola data unless they've raised enough money to hire a postdoc?

I feel like all projects have equal value and that is why I sign up for all of the projects and let WCG staff set the priority. I feel like that is best because it keeps pace with what researchers can handle and helping projects finish their research sooner. It seems MCM gets more resources, but that will only last until that project gets closer to completion.
----------------------------------------Obviously any person here can donate to the project that they most closely identify with (they are volunteering their equipment and time), however I think that the more projects that are helped out by WCG then more researchers will want to use WCG to get their projects completed and help them overcome the main barrier (cost) to get their research completed. The good thing is at least WCG gives you the option to support the project that you would want to volunteer for. ![]() |
