Re: Austin, Texas, USA Meetup for World Community Grid Researchers, Development Team and Volunteers

The only thing expensive was the parking.

I parked away and walked in.

But the WCG event was free for WCG crunchers, no SXSW badge required.
The WCG staff were all very nice and very informative. They were especially interested in the crunchers' perspectives of all things WCG. If there is ever a similar event near you I would highly recommend you attend.

Also, there was an IBM Watson thing going on of secondary importance. biggrin

Thanks for sharing deltavee ! biggrin Lucky boy! wink

deltavee it was so lovely to meet you and impressive to hear how long you've been contributing to World Community Grid and how much computing time you donate every single day. Wow! Thanks so much both for what you do, but also for coming to meet us! During our daily call yesterday, the guys were filling in the rest of the team about meeting you.

We don't get many opportunities to meet volunteers so this was a treat for us. In fact even as a World Community Grid team, it's rare for us to get together - even though we speak to each other every day, some of us have yet to meet in person as we're spread out all over. Maybe I'll make a point of arranging something like this whenever we're traveling around promoting World Community Grid, which for me would probably be in Philadelphia in summer.

Re: Austin, Texas, USA Meetup for World Community Grid Researchers, Development Team and Volunteers

I'd come, but it's another continent...maybe you can make a tour around all 6 continents?! So everyone can meet you on conference...with scientist around a World!
what do you think about that idea?
wink

I think it's expensive :D

1. IBM has office all over the World! so they can legislate someone from the office...
2. WCG does work with lots of scientist, not only from USA...see Research page for more info...
3. it would make more easy for people to come to "same continent meeting", then going to USA...even some NATO countries (like us), have a VISA program to come into USA...not to mention flight, hotels, some allowance, etc...

could someone from WCG tell us if the idea is being considered?! wink

I meant it would be expensive for the WCG team to travel around the world to meet and greet volunteers - I thought you were referring to the WCG team, not IBM people.

If any of the WCG team ever come to the upper midwest I would jump at the chance for a meeting. But if not, so be it. I hope the event(s) at SXSW were beneficial for all concerned.
Cheers

Sgt.Joe, where in the midwest? Would Chicago work?

SXSW was incredibly useful - hoping to get an article on that soon..

I would be hoping for Minneapolis, St. Paul or maybe Madison, although Chicago might be a more popular venue for more people. For us smaller town people that is an awfully big city. An advantage for there would be a central location for a wide number of people. Thanks for asking.
Cheers
