Hi manuelz,

perhaps you speek german as you are located in Switzerland.
The following site may be of interest for you. It describes some steps to secure a rented server and is written in german.

Secure Root Server

To control boinc on your server you may have a look at efmer boinctasks.
It is a small program that runs on windows and you can fully controll serveral boinc installations on different computer.

BoincTasks

Re: Free or cheap used PC's for WCG - worth it?

Dankeschön Eric! I'll look into that.

I just have my first results in... and I'm a little disapointed.. the 8 cores i rented do about half as much work in the same time as my 4 core PC at home :(

Manny is my 4core i5 at home (4c/4t)
ns is Xeon 2 x E5504 (8c/8t)

edit

Oh wait.. I calculate that wrong, right? those 3 days on the NS was done in 24 hours...

There is no reason to be disapointed.
Give your server a couple of days...
Most projects here at WCG send out workunits (wu) that need a socalled wingmen. That means the wu sent back by your computer needs to be verified by another computer.
If your computer was classified as a trusted computer (which hapens after some valid wu) you might get wu which don't need a wingman.

You can proof your results status page. There you can see all your wu in all states as In Progress, Pending Validation, Pending Verification and so on.
In all statistics only Valid wu are getting counted.
If your new server run 24 hours with 8 tasks and you see 3 days in the device statistic that means from the ~8 days of wus your computer returned wu worth 3 days were valid. The rest (5 days) should be in Pending Validation, Pending Verification or Error (hopefully not).

Re: Free or cheap used PC's for WCG - worth it?

KLiK,

The $50 was for the rest of the computer, not the processor. I only spent $20 on the processor. smile

well, I just ordered Q9550S for 2 PCs of mine!
That's about 2x $90...can't really get that much more electricity!

But it will spend 2x 30W less...or about 525,6kWh yearly!
It will give me back $50 yearly less in electricity...when I sell 2x X3360 (for $50 each at least), it will give me $100...so they'll return $150 within a year of $180 investment!
wink

& also, I make less carbon foot-print!
cool

Ohh dear.. My wife forbid me to let a pc run 24/7 because it drives our cats crazy. So for the moment I can only run during the day - which will be my gaming PC I guess. I'll look around for some cheap server to rent for the time being. Thank you everyone for your inputs anyways, I hope they help someone!

just (accidentally) leave a doors opened of your home...it's Feb after all!
laughing cool

Dedibox is sold out. May I ask you what kind of server you rent on Wholesale? Are the sub 35 dollars worth it?

OMG I just missed a SSD Server on Dedibox that came free because I wasnt registered yet... :/ I guess I keep trying

Got a Kimsufi :) I'll try to install that now.. :p

Damn, that Kimsufi got away...was looking forward to KS-1 for that 2c/4t Atoms for only 5€!
confused

omg I didn't know that.. :D maybe I should read more before bothering you guys... No errors - pending validation is bursting full :) Thanks Eric

no worry...everything on WCG is calculated in donation of days, not points & WUs...so if you're chasing some medals that we call badges here - it's only days you need to worry about!
wink

yes, that's just fine...if you want to do the job done quickly!

but, as the WCG is only evaluating spent time on calculations...so 1x KS-5 = 2x KS-1 = 8t!
& also, 1x 25€ > 2x 5€!
biggrin wink
