When I start up my computer 0% of the CPU is being used (normal). However once I launch BOINC, the CPU goes up to 50% usage doing something else other than BOINC, and so the work is suspended because the CPU is busy doing whatever else it's doing.
I adjusted the preferences to allow BOINC to operate regardless of CPU usage by other processes, but it still only uses about 50% of the CPU (even though it's allowed to use 100%) because the computer is "busy" doing something else. When I close BOINC the CPU still trots along at 50% doing this process that boinc started. I can only bring it back down to normal by restarting the computer again, and making sure not to launch boinc. It would seem that launching BOINC starts a process in my computer not associated with the program whatsoever. Does anyone know what this process is? Thanks for any & all help! |

P.S. This is a dedicated computer only used to calculate for WCG - and so there are no other applications used on this system.

You didn't meant what system and OS, but thinking it's a Windows machine:
Use Task Manager and select to show processes of all users. Sort the processes descending on used CPU. Probably there is a process under system account eating your cycles. |

BOINC does not start anything but science applications it controls.
----------------------------------------1) Absent any system/client version info, post a complete copy of the BOINC message log [or event log if you have a newer client, shown with Ctrl+Shft+E]. This will tell us what your client has done/is doing since startup. 2) If Windows, hit Ctrl+Shft+Esc to open Task Manager. In there, hit the show all user processes so everything gets listed. Then tell us the exact names of the processes you say are using 50% even when suspended, noting that BOINC only reacts to the % of CPU load setting for *non*BOINC processes. What security software is on that computer? Is it up-to-date? [Edit 1 times, last edit by SekeRob* at Feb 3, 2016 7:57:48 AM] |

On windows, after a reboot, a boinc performance test is usually performed. In this case, the projects are suspended, and boinc is gathering the available CPU performance in order to calculate later the claimed points.
----------------------------------------Maybe the observed CPU is caused by this performance test ? ... Cheers, Yves |

That test is only executed 1x every 5 days, IF the system is restarted. Else it won't be done until a client upgrade or whenever a system reboot is done. It runs at the lowest nice priority [supposedly], to process the same as were it a science app, to best approximate the calculation capacitance it normally does in background. It would be 50% on a dual core, but that'd be the only configuration you'd see that load for a single threaded process at full throttle.
Exception is, if the test fails due other high system load [which would be recorded in the message log]. Don't know is if is executed then at each boot up, but will last at most 30 seconds anyhow. |

If not disabled in cc_config, this performance test is IIRC every 120 hours, last only 30 seconds and uses only 1 core. (Rob was faster . . .) Thanks for the tips everyone! The problem ended up resolving itself after a time, so I'm suspecting it's something that I should expect whenever I restart the computer on occasion. But the responses on this thread were very helpful and I gained insight I didn't have before, specifically about the performance test.
