Re: MCM - Linux Ubuntu & Win10 comparison

I see variations from 3 1/2 to 8 hours on two identical i7-3770 machines running Win7 64-bit. I would average your results for a longer time before reaching conclusions.

well, this 2 machines are almost not used for 99% of their time...so only OS, with some programs & BOINC...

so, that can be ruled out!
cool

Those two machines of mine are dedicated and run BOINC only, 24/7. My point was that the variations are in the work units themselves, not what else the machine is doing.

Re: MCM - Linux Ubuntu & Win10 comparison

I've noticed linux biung much slower than windows on the same hardware too. It seems to be across all project on BOINC. I have a few dual boot machines with Windows (10 and 7) and linux Mint. Projects on the same mahine run maybe 50% slower on linux than they do on Windows. I assume windows is simply written such that the hardware is used much more efficiently than with Linux. It's disappointing because I prefer the linux environment.

Better put your kevlar fest on or go in hiding as half of the sciences match in performance Win>< Lnx and the other half [Vina engine based] runs twice as fast on my and many if not all other's Linuxes.

Indeed, Linux is almost always faster. Sometimes much faster. Maybe you have something misconfigured?

Re: MCM - Linux Ubuntu & Win10 comparison

Have you actually dual booted a machine and checked the speed of the same hardware running both Linux and Windows?
Are your machines that you've confirmed to be faster under linux running intel or AMD architectures?
I'm running AMD on my dual boot machines and BOINC is slower under Linux on the same hardware.

Try reading past posts, a whole stockpile, reporting on Dual boot findings. There 's never been reported distinction on CPU maker.

Re: MCM - Linux Ubuntu & Win10 comparison

All my work units run faster on Linux than Windows. So much so, that I got rid of all my Windows images except one that runs Boinctasks only on a small 4 processor machine. The only exception was FAH2 which, at one time, ran more efficiently on Windows.

Sure I did. I have about 20 computers running BOINC 24/7, I have spent a lot of time testing and optimizing them all.
