Is there a place where you can view possible future projects on WCG?

Is there anywhere that you can view possible upcoming projects on the grid? Just curious ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

Thanks!

EBM9000,
This is the most closely guarded secret in the WCG. We don't find out about the existence of future projects until we start to receive the Beta workunits. And even then we often don't know what the project is until the the time the first production workunits hit and we get the first announcement. I'm not complaining, that's just the facts.

is it just plain curiosity? wud it ever be useful to know ?
dont yu think there is not enough crunching to do?

MCM for example will adress a wide range of cancers
In their research at one stage or another scientists cud need help
of grid computing.

The OP is just asking, very nicely I might add, so no need to get in his face.
As to why it is "the most closely guarded secret in the WCG" is probably to avoid creating cruncher's expectations if a project takes a long time to become available or doesn't make it to the finish line.

Actually, yes. Yes it would be useful to the volunteers crunching the work units. Many people plan their hardware upgrades based on the needs of the projects they support. There are many whom will only crunch for WCG rather than other projects as well. So, if per se WCG had a GPU project coming up next, people would start looking into GPU upgrades. Knowing in advance what types of GPU's the project would support would also be extremely helpful. I have also talked to quite a few people looking for projects that address certain issues. If I knew in advance one of those issues was in the pipeline, it would give me time to notify them and get them on board. They would probably look into investing into more hardware as they would be excited. However, by not knowing they have to wait longer to order. Not a major issue I know, but the quicker things get done, the better right?

Re: Is there a place where you can view possible future projects on WCG?

Planning for X Y or Z is in contravention to the idea of 'we want your idle cpu time, when the machine has to be on', not of the 56 thousand active users [yes 56K who've returned at least 1 result in the past 30 days], they/we are locked, and fully addicted, but the millions that do not know about volunteer computing.

On the other hand, this has long proven to be a 'we volunteers get total control of the 'in kind' donated moneys... a sure fire way to get these projects done and IBM taking the marketing credits. Fine too, in symbian, but if WCG/IBM would actually recognize the monetary value we volunteer donate, and more with the right inducements, than knowing some would help retain and motivate who want to contribute more than 'idle cpu time'.

** long convinced IBM gets more out of this. To them this is a 'research' and development project, that the BOINC enterprise is... call it 'the intangibles'. Read the shareholder report to know what they are.

well, SekeRob I have to give you +1 for this!

yes, WCG has a problem of retaining their volunteers here...some my topic have asked about the PR of WCG, 'cause I've been doing if deliberately over some web pages or more recently on twitter...even some twitter accounts mentioned me with WCG in same quotes, so it's been a good PR (but I'm not an expert in PR)...but most of them do't stick around, of 11 of them only 1 stuck around! that's too bad...
how can we make it better....well, some ideas have been mentioned (better forum software with PM, PM to team members, PM to all people that you signed up, etc.) & none of them implemented...people will sign up, if they got "a good reason to"...but will stick around if they "feel comfortable here"...the later is what WCG should work on, 'cause we got enough reason for them to sign up (FAHB, OET, MCM, UGM & CEP2)!

& thank you, finally, for getting a word that we "spend money on machines & on their electricity"...
once again I'd like to say that "spare power" is something that's obsolete, 'cause current machines use a slow down of CPU MHz & use less power - similar like a Cadillac V8 or Acura V6 turn off some cylinder injection of fuel, rubbing it only on cruising & using less fuel (as a mech.eng. it's the closest I can make picture of)...everything now is in "throttling" of the CPU, engine or any other device that we use!

also, some new part of WCG page about announced projects & their finishing percentage to betas, would be nice...we'd know if there are some new projects that wants to work their science here?! how much they did their paper-work to use WCG? some new updates about their science methods & (of course) estimated minimal requirements (GPU CUDA or OpenCL project min req, CPU min req, RAM min req, etc.)...
Hopefully WCG can make that & we can tell anyone interested that they can sign up & that soon a science that they are interested in "helping" will be available!
wink

Occasionally the scientists spill some beans. https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,38635 about a coming phase 2 of the Help Fight Childhood Cancer.

Maybe in chat start a "Intel on new and upcoming research projects.". You won't get it from WCG for the various reasons, but then we can still work to collect the pieces [and not harass admin/researchers... it's just a data collection!]

To start: Projects in Development:
