Using our HDDs for storage?

Have you considered using our disks for storage, and if so, is it even possible? I'm short-stroking my HDDs down to 5%, so I have 9.5 TB of free storage space on my disks. I have no use for it.

Not sure, but there might be bandwidth and data integrity issues. Distributed storage is a whole different ballgame than distributed computing. But it is an interesting idea.

Re: Using our HDDs for storage?

That's interesting, KLiK, but also a bit scary. What if somebody stores illegal stuff on the HDDs?

"
--Will DriveShare and MetaDisk users be anonymous?
-- Yes. We do not require user accounts or personal information to use the platform."

"
-- Can someone be held responsible for the uploaded contents on DriveShare/MetaDisk?
-- People running the DriveShare client will never know what files they are hosting, nor will they be able to access them. The person uploading files to the network will be responsible."

I think I'll pass. However, I would have considered it if they had required the uploaders to identify themselves, perhaps with a valid VISA credit card, and if also the company had access to the encryption keys -- and if they had paid me in central bank money. Anybody can start a crypto currency, which they seem to have done, but what is the value of such a currency?

Re: Using our HDDs for storage?

There is also a cloud storage project that uses BOINC to connect the "storage" volunteers: http://www.keep4ever.net/FR/keep4ever.awp?M28

Re: Using our HDDs for storage?

I thought they (Keep4ever) just awarded you BOINC points for using their software. Their software didn't use the BOINC software in any actual way. Did this finally change? If so, how is the BOINC software actually being used?

Edit: A few forum threads for reference on those wanting more on the topic.
