Windows Domain Controller?

Since this update, my domain controller hasn't done any work because it was running on 5.10.45. I don't want to use a virtual machine on it. Is there any other options or is running BOINC on a domain controller no longer possible?

Re: Windows Domain Controller?

Follow the certificate discussion threads from round about when SHA256 was being forced and possible ways to get around it [Copying over specific files from newer versions]. As yet there is now newer official version for DCs that can be installed [The problem is the limited right account generation part that BOINC has come to depend on]. Don't know if this a Windows DC specific issue, but do not recollect to have seen anyone report a 'DC' related installation problem for Linux.

Re: Windows Domain Controller?

I highly doubt copying files would work because 5.10.45 is a very old version. If it is confirmed to work then I need to know what files.

Windows domain controllers aren't going to let software installers create domain users. That's the fatal flaw with version 6 and newer on AD DCs.

Re: Windows Domain Controller?

Just tested on a WinXP box using 5.10.45 32 bit. The original 5.10.45 will not connect to WCG as it gets the SSL error. Using the 7 dll files from the 7.6.9 version to replace the dll files that came with 5.10.45 allows 5.10.45 to connect properly. You can extract the 7 dll files from the 7.6.9 version without installing that version by following the instructions below.

Here are the links for the 7.6.9 installer:
32 bit: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.6.9_windows_intelx86.exe
64 bit: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.6.9_windows_x86_64.exe

Once you have downloaded the one you want, open a command prompt and navigate to the directory the file was downloaded into. Decide which directory you want the output of the exe file to be created in. Then execute the following command in the command prompt window:

boinc_7.6.9_windows_intelx86.exe /s /x /b"C:\ExtractionFolder" /v"/qn"

This should create a file named BOINC.msi in the extraction folder. The msi can be opened with some zip programs (7zip works) and the 7 dll files extracted into Program Files\BOINC to replace the default ones. Then 5.10.45 should connect to WCG again.

Edit: spelling

Re: Windows Domain Controller?

That sounded familiar, and yes the noted certificate discussion thread mentions it [for the 'highly' doubting Thomas's]: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewpostinthread?post=497529

Re: Windows Domain Controller?

Why not just install 7.6.9? It works fine on my 4 Server 2012 R2 DCs.

Re: Windows Domain Controller?

Yeah, Dr.Anderson wrote that he'd removed some sort of intentional blockage to allow installing on DCs as of some 7.6 version.

This worked! I took the ca-bundle.crt too with it (8 files total) just to be safe.

To anyone that tries this solution, make sure to match 32-bit version 5 with 32-bit version 7 and 64-bit version 5 with 64-bit version 7.
