Re: Uncovering Genome Mysteries project update - October 2015

Thx for that and doing subtraction, multiplication, divisions, we suddenly are 91% at the coming point of resume. Are those progress bars on the research page worth the screen-space they're occupying? Maybe WCG should give up on publishing the pretense of knowing how much work there is, was and will be for any project.

Erika,

Thanks for the update - it's good to hear about the work the team is doing.

The image amazone2.JPG on the update page is 3.5MB. Some folks won't enjoy having to download that. Any chance of replacing it with a more compressed file, even lower resolution, especially as it's scaled to 10% linear dimensions on the update webpage?

Although not relevant to the larger point you were making, I'd expect to see the progress around 66-67% when the project resumes because each of the new sequences are compared to each of the original sequences so the number of comparisons isn't linear as the data increases.

To your larger point, it's true in many cases the estimates for a project will need to change over the lifetime of the project. In the vast majority of cases, these estimates will increase upwards rather than downwards. Also, the progress bars were a feature that members had requested for a very long time, even knowing they would only be an estimate based on the information we have at the time.

Re: Uncovering Genome Mysteries project update - October 2015

blushing Missed this entirely in my equations, that the 20M also needed to be run against the original 200M or differently the original 200M against the new 20M, and Office 2016 now also having 'Ink', all can be done that Albert did ;))). OK, so I've plugged the new end number 28679 batches in and get to 66,667% with 19109. At the same lower pace as before with 342 days taken to do first 2/3rd, that's 170 days odd to get to the next last result.

Many thx and forward on (The betas, 17, ran fine on my Win/Lnx devices).

Edit: To precise, the 20M new also have to be compared amongst themselves i.e. 220M protein-protein sequence comparisons.

So happens, yesterday Oct.14 was 'to the day' 1 year ago of the UGM1 launch. Chart update with latest work volume data included: http://bit.ly/WCGUGM

The image size has been reduced.

Thanks,

if u r lead by d data here: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/stat/viewProject.do?projectShortName=ugm1

than 15214y of data 4 some 19109 batches...
getting some 44,5y per day of CPU power, with only 3 projects run (FA@h, MCM & CEP2)...
have to get to 28679 batch...
calculates about 224d to completion...
even with speed up of computers included, it's still 190d...by my calculation!

EDIT: so the ECD would around 26th Apr!

BUT, today we have 4 projects run (FAHB, OET, CEP2 & MCM)...
& we don't know how much "resource share" will UGM get on server?!
so I'd easily say it's 200+d to ECD...might be around 250d?!

1 thing is 4 sure: we'll all C it end!
cool
