Enterprise3dproject

In the late 70s I tried out a pinball machine and I remember how much I regretted wasting the coin on the game instead of buying chocolate. A few years later, in the early 80s, I tried playing a friend's Donkey Kong, and although I to some degree enjoyed it I've never played a videogame since then. These sort of activities have never really interested me and I can't explain why.

But now I stumbled onto this project, and for the first time I'm a bit curious. I definitely see now where this and future VR-games are heading. Watch this video (1080P) of how it will look inside a VR-helmet while taking a virtual walk inside the Enterprise spaceship. The absence of people makes everything more realistic, since people are difficult to simulate in a realistic way. Walking around feels almost like a final inspection of the ship before the crew arrives -- perhaps as a foreman, checking if the ship has been properly cleaned by the $7 an hour, four part-time jobs holding people. Yes folks, the liberal system -- as in liberty for the few -- will most likely be around even in the 23rd century, which goes against Gene Roddenberry's vision of the future.

Although I'm still interested in original, more realistic science fiction movies, think Oblivion, I'm no longer interested in the Star Trek franchise, not to mention all the mutant movies Hollywood keeps spitting out. But VR, at this level, is much more immersive than a movie can ever be, so if WCG decides to do a GPU project, I'll buy a higher-end graphic card and then I'll perhaps try this and other, similar walking around games. The game developers can count me out if running or shooting is required, but I am interested in realistically displayed futuristic environments.

"The Enterprise 3D project aims to create this vessel in its entirety, in the Unreal 4 game engine. Yes, this means it will be Oculus rift ready! The goal is to be able to walk the entire length of the ship, without interruption or load times. Previous virtual tours have not gone far enough. They usually are 360 degree panoramic, without actual movement or immersion. The virtual Enterprise should feel seamless and like you are actually on board the ship. Because of the sheer volume of what needs to be created, a modular approach to the ship construction will be taken. But each and every room will be accessible, and unique in some way. This means filling in and creating rooms never before seen on the budget-restricted show."

Edit

Soon gamers will be able to kill robots in their own homes.

Re: Enterprise3dproject

TBMS, thanks for the link !!! Being a Trekky, I would enjoy it also. I also get bored real fast with games (the only one I can say that I played thoroughly is Nintendo's Banjo & Kazooie). I like the concept a lot, but there has to be some sort a interaction with the environment... maybe simple missions or tasks. Nothing complex, just enough to keep the interest.
