I am running a UGM which seems to be endless. It shows it's been running now for 61 hours and another 9 to go, but this changes after the 9 hours have been added to my total run time, a new time to run is then added and total time left never changes from 81%. Obviously there is a problem so should I abort this project? Don't want to lose all that time and points if this is what should be happening. Any advice would be appreciated

Have you tried restarting the computer? If this does not help I would certainly recommend aborting the task. I hope restarting the computer works for you

Thanks very much, that worked. The task is still there showing what it should have showed probably at the beginning. Will know what to do next time if it happens again.

I've had quite a number of these too. I notice that my CPU usage on whichever core is processing this project drops from its usual 100% down to around 20%, the elapsed time ticks away but the remaining time stays constant or increases slightly.
Stopping and re-starting BOINC always kicks it back into life and the task then seems to conclude successfully in a respectable time. I'm considering opting out of this project as it seems a shame for my computer to be wasting its time. |

It would be interesting to know what operating system is being used when this problem occurs. I have never experienced this problem with Windows, but have encountered it with Linux on several of the different projects. For me it appeared to be related to a problem with wireless connectivity. After upgrading a range extender to a newer model, the problem has almost entirely disappeared. I don't know if this pertains to the original poster, but the symptom appears identical.

Not seen on Linux or any of the Windows with 2.9 years contributed [6,075 results]. Both client version and OS is of interest, as much as how installed, service [meaning it runs even if not signed-in], or user [have to sign-in before BOINC starts]. Is the BOINC Screensaver used? Are Antivirus [which?] exceptions for the BOINC data_dir/project folders in place?
Restarting client, or do the LAIM off, suspend, LAIM on, is the very very old kick in the butt method dating back to HPF2. Testing will be difficult as the project went into stasis all of a sudden. |

Asked a 3 part question. If you answer all 3 we can see if there's something popping up.

OK,
OS is Windows7 Professional SP1 64-bit BOINC v 7.2.47 (x86). wxWidgets v 2.8.10 BOINC Not installed as a service. BOINC Screensaver not used. Antivirus Trend Micro Internet Security v10.0.1150. No exceptions in place. That's an interesting point actually: I had overlooked the fact that I recently changed my anti-virus software from Microsoft to Trend on the PC in question, although it has been installed on another Windows7-Pro machine (but 32-bit) for several years and I haven't noticed the problem there. I'll investigate that avenue a bit further. I've not seen this effect before and I have contributed over 84 years of crunch time to WCG on a variety of XP and Win7 machines. |
